View Full Version : sold my rx8 today
... but I bought a new one.
My car left warranty a few months ago (I've had it since June 2003), and I took it in today to get a "failing coolant level" sensor replaced. Mazda are actually fixing it as a warranty issue, even though the car is outside the warranty period. Bigs ups to Mazda for that.
Then , because I was bored, I wandered into the dealership and asked one of the salesguys "could I trade my rx8 in on a new one, pay out my finance, and then get new finance for the same monthly rate?"
They valued the car, they looked at my payout, they said "yes". So I get a brand new car and continue with my normal monthly payments :bootyshak
Leather pack 6 speed manual with sunroof. Stormy Blue. A new colour for the rx8.
I should have it next week.
You can see the colour here, on the mx5 minisite.

I have been thinking about it for a while, and have recently taken the Alfa Brera (yuk!), the BMW 1 Series turbo job (horrible) and the BMW 330Ci (nice, but nothing over the rx8, and I would have to pay twice as much) for test drives. None were as satisfying or as fun to drive - and they were all more expensive.
takahashi 11-22-2006, 02:21 AM Well done on not getting another red.... LOL
I like Stormy Blue, I wish I have an option to get a white one :(
BTW:
1) This thread is worthless without pics j/k :hahano:
2) Get back on line and post again
3) You don't need break-in advice don't you ;).
Congrats
You want me to post on this forum more often?
shucks, I didn't know you cared.
I can start some random anti BushCo rants if you want.
MissyK 11-22-2006, 05:58 AM Yessssss post here, i dont post on the other forum.

Gomez 11-22-2006, 07:54 AM It is on the Mazda Australia website....Stormy Blue has replaced Strato Blue.

Taka, you can get a White RX-8.....White is still on the palette.
Gomez 11-22-2006, 08:00 AM Here's a better pic. Overcast day.

Gomez 11-22-2006, 08:02 AM What's happening with the flywheel, dbb?
Black-8 11-22-2006, 09:09 AM how much did you lose in the trade in if you don't mind me asking (% is fine if you don't want to state how much you buy it for and how much the dealer valued it). Just want to know the approx resale value.
takahashi 11-22-2006, 09:28 AM Mez that is from North America... not SA.... NA is not very close to SA I think... hehe
Revolver 11-22-2006, 04:54 PM Congrats on the update.
I have loose plans to do the same if nothing better comes along when my warranty expires. However, transferring all my mods is going to be a drag... :uhh:
Grizzly8 11-22-2006, 04:56 PM Nice choice ;)

How did you tell? ;)
What's happening with the flywheel, dbb?
The flywheel and exhaust is going with the car.
I will get the exhaust redone again, not sure about the flywheel, I'll have to see if I notice the difference (the slower, albiet still insanely fast, revving).

Lose ? The price that City Mazda, Adelaide, paid for my rx8 was almost lineball with the payout figure of the existing finance.
I'd think they were cooking the figures, except that I had the payout figure in front of me, when the valuer came in and independently gave me the resale figure for the car.
So, as I said in the opening post - I get a new car (with a bonus sunroof, which I didn't have before), and keep paying the same per month.
ie. I was pleasantly suprised by my resale value.
Yessssss post here, i dont post on the other forum.
Which "other" forum?
You will have to excuse me, I am new to the InterWeb, and didn't know there were other forums.
WhiteRain 11-22-2006, 07:12 PM Grats on getting another 8. It's pleasing to know that after 4 years on the market, the 8 is still outshining it's competitors in the same (and higher) price brackets.
Welcome to the InterTron n00b. hehe. :)
Rotor Convert 11-23-2006, 07:36 AM Hey Dbb,
Hello there...will look out for you on the road.....live up Port Road myself....I like your colour..I nearly got that colour too but ended up getting the supposedly jinxed silver!
I too have found nothing else that tickles my fancy like the 8. Think I will be doing the same in 1 years time! Only change I will make is the colour. Will get a red one next!
Anyhow nice to meet another Adelaidian.....glad to know I'm not the only one to frequent the forum here.
See ya round maybe? If you fancy a drive to run in your rotor why not come for a motor in December to Phillip Island!

I still like the red ... but if I replace my red one with a new red one, the question I would get asked is :
"what happened to the exhaust", not "you got a new one?"

"Frequent" is probably too strong a word. But I do pop in from time to time, after my initial flurry of activity in 2003.

December is stupidly busy for me, unfortunately.
Although I do have next Friday off, so I can take my position on the Hill to [ostensibly] watch the cricket.
Phantom Menace 11-23-2006, 04:48 PM That's what I call devotion! Much propers bro. You came up on the dealer and "kept" the car! Not many would turn around and get the same model/make. :worship:
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
It really is a no brainer though.
What are cars are there, within 50% of the price, that have :
A well sorted chassis with superb handling and dynamics
a six speed short throw gearbox and heavy clutch
rear wheel drive with LSD (AWD like the WRX cars *bore* me)
4 seater coupe
decent build quality and interior
a functional boot/trunk
Having a nice free revving rotary engine also helps :-)
The only thing that really comes close is the Holden Monaro / Pontiac GTO. But that is too big, and is really more of a muscle car than a sports car. Something like the G35 isn't an option either, as they are not sold in Australia.

No G35s in Oz? Hmph. Maybe I'll move there...

:mdrmed: :mdrmed: :mdrmed: Good one.
Still nothing on the market to tempt me either.
a few idle questions about the newer builds (the one I am getting was built on 16 October 2006) :
- do they still come with a low-speed spare tyre?
- do they have the uprated alternator and larger battery (that you get on an older model if you complain about flooding)?
- do they use proper keys?
Gomez 11-26-2006, 07:28 PM Same old spare, new starter (not alternator), switchblade key.
http://www.media.mazda.com/photolibrary/img/jpeg_s/rxe04_007s.jpg
ok, so the key is different.
City Mazda (adl) are installing an alarm and tinting the windows, they are the only aftermarket options I chose. I now need to decide what to do for the exhaust ... do I get the same one as before (which, IMHO, sounds better than the Hymee and other custom jobs - but the JunBL resonator had to be tigwelded twice because of the inability to cope with the heat )?
Oh well, I'll sort that out later.
Gomez 11-26-2006, 07:45 PM Wouldn't have failed due to heat (it's not that hot down the back). Poor design or vibration maybe? Poor welding?
The resonator is just behind the cat. The welds themselves (that the exhaust fitters) made, never failed. The resonator unit itself started to come apart at the (rear of) the cylinder where it joined the circular back plate.
Pressure then? Either way, that resonator unit couldn't cope...

Courtesy of a half-arsed throw into the keys basket and a resulting bounce off my tiled kitchen floor, I discovered this morning that 'er indoors spare switchbalde key doesn't like being dropped :nono: . It's in four pieces atm. Didn't have time to play with it, so I'll see if I can get it back together tonight... :bootyshak
It arrived at the dealership today :

takahashi 11-27-2006, 02:08 AM Tell them to keep the wheel cover for you. It will make a very unique pizza plate. :hahano:
Detrich 11-27-2006, 02:59 AM how many years were left on your original loan, and how many years did the new loan add?
I had about 21 months on the original Esanda Finance ... and I have taken out a new 5 year loan.
I imagine in another 3 years I will do the same thing ... hopefully the series II rx8 will be out by then, or I might even consider a Supra ...
dbb, am i supposed to be seeing part of the sunroof in that pic you posted, cos i cant lol
I actually forgot to look when I was at the dealer today, and you are right, I can't see it from that angle,
I'll look tomorrow.
The stock report with the VIN on it definitely says "SUNROOF", and I have paid for one.
Cool. It'd be interesting to see whether some dealerships are fitting the sunroof locally rather than getting the sunroof as a direct factory option.
I'm just down at the dealer now, the car definitely has a factory sunroof. That photo must have been taken at an unfortunate angle.
I pick the car up tomorrow.
Also , apologies if this post has weird formatting, my blackberry doesn't like rx8club.com.
I now have it. It's all the little differences that make it feel like a new car.
And the clutch feels a lot more forgiving than my old clutch ...
I love the colour.
I picked it up yesterday.
