View Full Version : Just because you don't need it, doesn’t mean the car shouldn’t have it!
Spoonie 10-16-2002, 03:47 PM I see a lot of comments on what the car should and shouldn't have. If I don’t like leather that doesn't mean that the car shouldn't have the option. The same goes for the NAV and the moon-roof. Some people on this board are only considering themselves. The car has to appeal to a multitude of individuals. Saying that the RX-8 shouldn’t have NAV, a Moonroof, or power seats is a selfish statement.
Hercules 10-16-2002, 03:55 PM I think that most people have pretty much said that it doesn't benefit them personally.
I don't think anybody really means that the car should be without it. I just don't want nav, the rest I do.
bwayout 10-16-2002, 06:13 PM ... and I'm one of those who will order the NAV and moonroof/sunroof (which ever mazda builds) and power seats with memory would be a nice touch so my wife could have her own setting ... that's if I'd ever let her even drive it! :D
I'm also thinking of getting the less powerful engine, since my wife and I both get our share of speeding tickets - we personally don't need to travel any faster (and that way I can save some money for those other options)

do you think the less powerful one wont go 45 in a 35 zone or is there just less temptation?
Grimace 10-16-2002, 06:52 PM I don't care if the car comes with a microwave, just don't make me pay for it if I want the 250 HP engine and performance package.

I am not sure about entirely, though I love my V1. Let me introduce you to VASCAR. The patrol in Arizona did. And there was that ticket from the patrol in Nevada with instant on radar on the silver state.
But I can count MANY times that thing has saved me. :)

VASCAR. It's an acronym for
Visual
Average
Speed
Computer
And
Recorder
Anyway, it's when a patrolman sits in his car and as you pass a checkpoint hits a button. As you pass the next one, he hits the other button. The computer calculates your speed.
As he said when he ticketed me "Nice Valentine 1, but you would never have seen me. I was 300 yards off the freeway and hidden."

I don't think I'll see that too often. Cops around here give tickets at the end of the month, and I always have a trusty PBA card to get myself out of one jam :)
Besides, I don't speed excessivly, usually 10-15 miles over which isn't terrible on the highway. PBA card can take care of that one :p
wakeech 10-17-2002, 11:54 AM what's a PBA card??
i've seen many a driver get nabbed for only 10km!!! over the 100km/h limit... effin' cops... wasn't even anyone around!! this guy was just cruisin' by me... i was doin' 105, and he calmly cruised by, they shot him with the radar, and that was that...

Policeman's Benevolence Association. If you have a friend or relative that's a cop, they give you these cards and it's like a get out of jail free card :)
Provided you're not doing something REALLY stupid...
wakeech 10-17-2002, 06:03 PM whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat??? are you serious?? really really really??? seriously?? honestly, are you shittin' me?? really?? oh my god...

Yup. If I get pulled over and they ask for "Liscense and registration", underneath my liscense I slip the PBA card, and they look at it and decide whether to let you go.
It's like a courtesy for people who know cops :P 90% of the time they will let you off, but that 10% you had to do something really stupid like a 100 in a 25, or the cop's just a jerk :)
I don't think I'll have a problem, this will save me one time and then I'm a happy camper.

Yeah I heard about this also. Back when I use to live in the Southern California (L.A.) area and had to take one of those "defensive driving school" classes (due to a speeding ticket), someone in the class mentioned that they had one plus some other kind of card that showed they also were also a contributer to some kind of local community Police charity.
You keep them very visible, next to or underneath your driver’s license so the officer will notice them when you pull out your license to show him.
The teacher of the class said that this wasn’t true, just some kind of urban myth. Then someone else in the class said that if it’s true … why was he here taking the course with the rest of us? He said that some the cops are very territorial, He had one for the “Valley” not “Orange County!”
I wonder if that means you’d need one for every different community that you drive through ;) …Or just never go over 8 miles past the posted speed limit :D … yeah, sure. :p
What does everyone else think?

Yes, it's all in the mind... Or at leat my mind.
And less acceleration response (I hope) ... :D
On city streets, I never speed (at least not since I was 16-18 ...
I'll admit that it's the freeway driving that gets me. Especially when traffic is very light with mostly straight road ahead. The posted speed might be 55 or even 65 and I sometimes find myself doing 80-85+ ... and in an old 1990 Ford/Mazda Probe - I'd hate to think what I might accomplish in a RX-8...

Nah, my card will work for the whole of Jersey :)
Of course if I get pulled over and the cop lets me use it, he also takes it from me :) So it's a one-time use only, but I can get another if I want... my friend gets 12 a year and has a lot left over after his mom dad and sister :)

I am so envious! :(
Hey, does anyone here in the Dallas area know if it works here?
I also need to investigate the laws regarding laser radar detection, jammers and license plate protection from roadside-mounted cameras... I'd have to include that when I plan my budget for the RX-8 - Not that I ever really plan on speeding ... (it can also tie into my james bond/aston martin or batmobile loaded with gadgets fantasy)
It's just that sometimes when I'm not paying constant attention to my speedometer (my old 1990 Prode does not have cruse-control) and I'll glance down at it and get a supprise ... and as my luck would have it, a few seconds later I'll pass a police car off to the side with a radar gun ...
On a more hopeful note, since we've been here in Dallas a little over 4 1/2 years, My wife and I have only received 2 speeding tickets... It's been 2 years since I got stoped. I hope this year can go by for me to stay clean ...
