Well, probably the obvious times: mid-day (from about 11 AM until 2 PM) and late at night (11 PM to about 4 AM). Otherwise LA Traffic can be awful.

If you are looking for recommendations on alternate routes, just north of the Los Angeles County line, past the 14/5 interchange, you can take the 210 Freeway East. Continue on the 210 to the 210/134 join - stay on the 210 East all the way to the 15 Freeway (about 40 miles). Take the 15 South to the 10 Freeway East. Take the 10 East to Phoenix.

Unless you are travelling during rush hour, this is a somewhat less traveled route than taking the 5 South to the 10 east.

Dude I would say in the afternoon or really, really late at night. Los Angeles traffic is almost always a bear to get through, good luck.

Yes and we all know how hard it is to get through a bear.

Any time from 7:00AM to 6:30PM the traffic is pretty thick, your best bet is to hit LA county after 7:00 PM.

thanks everyone. looks like we are going to try to drive through la after 10pm filling up for gas before we hit la so we dont have to exit the freeway at all. I think we are going to take the above mentioned alternate route as well.

I'd definitely recommend the alternate 210-to-15 route; if you came through LA after 10 PM you'd probably hit CalTrans coning off multiple lanes for road maintenance somewhere along I-5 and/or I-10. Like other posters said, there are NO good times to drive through the heart of LA anymore.

And don't think about Sat and Sun. Sometimes Sat & Sun's traffic are pretty bad too.
