Southern California Sticker Markup

I was at a dealer the other day (So Cal) that claimed there was a 4k markup on all RX-8 sticker prices at all dealers. I am suddenly drawing a blank on the exact term he used instead of markup. Anyway. I then visisted another dealer that said no such thing... so I'm a bit curious.

Is the first dealer the exception, or is it the second? I know when the cars are a hot comody there are ussually price markups, but not when every dealer you go to has 10 of them sitting on the lot....

There's a 100+ day supply of RX-8's, normal is around 60, therefore you should be able to get one at most for $200 over invoice. Best practice is to submit an internet quote request directy to the dealer so you get the fleet department. No negotiation required. Also check Edmunds for any rebates or special financing. Good Luck.

Hmm. I wonder if Autoclub has any agreements with a local Mazda dealership. I know Autoclub has a deal with Crown Toyota for some ridicilious amount like $100 above invoice.

PJ, did a quick check, Browning has 100 cars in inventory. I have bought 3 mazdas from them through the internet w/ great results. You can use AAA but its really not required.

You do mean 100 Mazda's in general, not 100 RX-8's, right? I tried to check myself, but their website is spitting out more errors than a drunk court reporter.

Perhaps they meant $4k above invoice (their cost)?

Let me guess: you were at Santa Monica Mazda and heard that crap. That's what I would expect since all car dealerships in Santa Monica have mark-ups "just because."

Anyway, while $200 over invoice would be great I think $500-750 over invoice is a better target.

Browning has 100+ RX-8's in stock. That's just 1 dealer. Go to Mazda USA and search inventory. You should have no problem getting a great deal.

I used to contract to different dealerships throughout So CA when I was younger doing custom audio and security installs. Way back then (early 90's) I noticed that some dealerships just tack on the extra $$ because they feel like it. I once asked one of the sales guys what was up with that. He said that when they had a car with an MSRP of $20K marked up to $22K, the buyer would feel like they got a deal if they sold it at $19.5K. $4K seems pretty extreme to me. The most I've seen at dealerships was $2500 for nothing. This is understandable for hard to find items, but not for something you can drive 15- 20 minutes and find elsewhere (and cheaper I might add).

Nowadays (given economic times) you can get a pretty good deal just about anywhere. If times are booming (like in the 90's) I'd suggest a volume dealer where they're willing to give more on their margin for sake of a higher number of units sold.

What is a moderate price for an RX-8, I have the one that has everything like sun roof appearance package leather and bunch of other stuff, navi, and after market rims. How much should that run in NorCal?

West Covina Mazda (in LA County) wasn't charging any mark-up back in July and I doubt if they are now - they are MSRP all the way. Unlike Romero Mazda that had 10K mark-ups.

Browning Mazda in cerritos has a lot of rx8's to test drive, but HORRIBLE staff to deal with when it comes to actually buying... they wouldnt even tell me what the APR was on a purchase! I will never deal with them again!!!

This is why I suggest dealing w/ the fleet / internet department. They don't play the games that guys hanging around out front do. I've had 3 simple clean transactions w/ Browning over the last 5 years all at around $200 over invoice. Bought my RX-8 last November for 200 over and no haggling.

I've purchased other makes at other dealers w/ similar experience as well.

I bought my RX at Browning Mazda. The salesman took me over to their storage area and let me pick from over 40 RX's. And I bought mine through AAA.

eswift.. so sorry to hear that man... yah, we/they hv about ~50 RX8s in stock. 10+ on the front lot, 30+ on the back lots... pretty much you can get any friggin color/package combo you want.

you really don't need to go thru fleet/net sales anymore to get 'price/APR%', just the right salesdude. if you ever wanna give 'em a try again, ring me... we even take S-Plan purchases. come during weekdays; trust me on this.

I understand now. It was probably just the salesfolk using cheap tactics to keep you from trying to haggle the price down.

I went around town with a friend shopping for a G35 the other day, and it seemed every salesman, when asked "what kind of a deal could you give me" would say "ya know, everyone else sells them for a few grand over msrp, but I'll just give it to you at sticker.."

So when it comes time to negotiate pricing, the buyer's expectation for a discount is lessened. Damn the shady salespeople!
