Anybody out there dealing with the fires? I live about 50 miles away from the fires, but I can smell the smoke, and there is ash everywhere. Yesterday, it felt like it was snowing. All these little pieces of ash were falling all day. It's bad enough that they accumulate on your car (it looks like an ash tray was dumped on my car), but when they get inside your car it's worse. Those little pieces of ash disintegrate and then get into all the cracks of your interior. I'm going to need a major cleaning after this is all over!

Anybody know how all the ash in the air might affect my rotary motor? Am I going to have to replace a filter sooner?

 

My father-in-law lives in north san bernardino, his cat and he got evacuated and are staying with his brother in orange. The most recent fire map I could find online this morning show's his area is still there, but we are still pretty worried. He spent most of yesterday getting things ready to leave, and taking pictures of all the stuff he was leaving behind.

As for the car, a good vacuum cleaning of the interior, and possible swapping out the air filter should aleviate any concerns... just make sure you go out and wash the paint soon after the ash stops falling, as ash could be acidic if it gets wet, and if let sit there, could do some damage.

I left my car at home last night and made my friends drive.
I've cleaned the car twice already but its gonna get dirty as soon as I go to work tomorrow

 

I've been living my 8 in the garage and driving my POS Toyota. Wife and I went to Costco in Anaheim Hills Saturday morning and when we came out the sunlight was all orange. The sun was a red ball that you could look right at, you could even see some sunspots. It's been snowing ash here since Friday and the smoke smell is really strong.

 

I live in La Jolla, and the smoke is everywhere. You can definitely see ash falling. We may have to evacuate eventually. I also people that live in Escondido, which is right in the middle of two of the fires.

 

I live in Normal Heights and I'm currently in Rancho bernardo... My car is parked just up the genesee hill from the 52. I'm at bit of a loss how I can get my car at this moment in time (left it at a friends house following a party last night).

The guy's place I'm staying at in Escondido, his Mom and brother have been evacuated and are heading for his place. Very weird/scary stuff.

Also I saw some footage on the news this morning about some people who were killed when their car burned. It was a little hard to tell but the front fender wells on the car made it look a little like an '8 - I hope it wasn't.

I'm on the edge of Santee and Lakeside. 67 runs along the right side of my condo. Hoping it will not cross this way, but ready to go if it does. On the good side, the bike is in the shop for service and my wife and I are home to get the cars out of the garage. Homeowners will cover the rest.

It's crazy! Don't even bother to wash the car this week, it'll be dirty by the morning. Aside from the smokery air (BBQ anyone?), I drive with my window closed and AC on :D It's scary. . .

 

Luckily I covered & tarped my yellow GT last night. That tarp is *covered* with ash-chunks! We live somewhere between North & South Park. My wife's folks live in Valley Center and my folks like in Kearny Mesa. I'm definitely driving the truck tomorrow -- the ash is filling the street gutters, and "spraying up" from the wheels as cars drive by. Very odd to see that. -jd.

 

I live in Diamond Bar, but my parents live about 15 miles away from the Rancho fires. They bought 3 huge air filters for the house, and when I went there to visit it was snow in california.

 

I couldn't figure out what the hell was up with air traffic today... Jet liners were litterally doing U-Turns over the LV Valley way high up (con-trail altitude). Then it hit me, they were diverted because of the fire. I think I heard they had to evac a FAA flight control station in SoCal. Plus I'm sure ash can't be good for jet engines.

 

I'm not sure, but i think Ontario Int'l is pretty much shut down due to it. The Santa Ana's blow right from the pass where the fire is, to right across the airport.

 

I live in West Covina and I can't even see the sun, juss ash and smoke

As was stated in an earlier post.... You want to get the ash off of your car ASAP and definately not let it get wet (from dew or sprinklers etc..) it will positively ETCH the finish.
I just washed my beater (sits outside after 11 years of shelter) and what a F*****N mess! This will be a challange for a detailer to conquer to be sure.

I Live in North Claremont which got hit by the fire Saturday night Sunday morning. I parked my cars on the street ready for a quick getaway (fortunately not needed on my street that night).
My RX-8 was filled with ash afterwards and needed a good clean out - those sticky mop head cleaners work pretty well as did my Dirt Devil.
When I took the car to the gas station for a fill up I found a HUGE amount of ash around the filler cap - so much so that I spent a few minutes blowing the area clean before unscrewing the cap!
I plan on having the air-fliters replaced this weekend.
I gave the radiator and the oil-coolers a good clean out when I washed the car. and will do so again this weekend.

I love my car but I sure wish she wasn't so leaky!

 

We got the cali smoke in vegas today.

I did a post in the lounge about it, but from a mile away from the MGM, you could just barely make out the outline.

It's getting windy tonight, so most of it is blowing away.

I can only imagine what you guys are dealing with.

When you say Clairemont, you mean Clairemont Mesa Blvd? Which side? I didn't know it was that close so far.

I know that Julian could be hit very soon.

 

man this is pretty crazy stuff. I'm stationed in the 29palms base and I know what you mean exactly about seeing the sun spots!! any new news about the whole situation?

 

There is a CLAREMONT up in LA County - on the LA/San Bernadino line. We are at the base of Mt. Baldy about 35 miles NE of downtown LA.

Poor Julian - such a nice town and people.
