I used track to work on my cardio for basketball season.
Basketball practice would finish and I'd head straight to the track to train with the team.

I hated sprints but they were a necessary evil.
I loved anything from 1-3 miles.

I ran the:
200
4x200
400
4x400

We are opposite there, I hate long distance and love sprinting. Anything more than a mile and I was miserable and bored.

to me, anything more then a mile became a mental challenge for me more then anything else.
Maybe that's why I liked those distances; the pace was fairly brutal and you need to stay focused and disciplined in order to maintain pace despite whatever your body was telling you.

Those were fun times.
It was always odd for my teammates to see me run because it caught almost all of them off guard. Us "big guys" aren't supposed to be that quick but nothing was more fun that running a mile in under 5:30 and seeing our point guards struggling to keep pace.

I hate running. But +1 on long distance stuff where I can come up with a beat or song in my head to keep my focus off of the unbearable pain and suffering

I guess what you felt doing those long runs is what I feel when running a sprint, just a shorter time span and a little different mind set. i.e. instead of maintaining a pace, my mindset was to run as fast as long as I could. Plus the discipline to get out of the blocks quickly and with the right technique so as not to lose time

that's tough to get right.
the sheer explosiveness required for it is something that's tough to describe until you've run competitively.

I remember in High School our coach was obsessed with cardio so we'd be out on the track every day of the pre-season.
We'd run 220 meter sprints and they had to be under 32 seconds.
Doesn't sound too tough, right?

Well... here's the catch.
The ENTIRE team runs it at the same time and everyone has to finish in under 32. If one person didn't, the team failed.
The goal was to run 12 in a ROW under 32 seconds.
I remember our 7'1 center not making it under 32 seconds on our 11th attempt. We had to start all over.
We ended having to run 14 more 220m sprints in order to hit the goal of 12 consecutive runs. I remember running in front of our center and reaching back, grabbing his jersey and pretty much dragging him across the finish line.

One of the most brutal things I've ever had to do. Guys were cramping up and falling, I was puking in between runs, one guy passed out. Didn't matter, we had to keep going.
For a track team, this isn't asking much but from a Basketball team?!
