SoCal | Anyone have a midpipe installed?
Hey guys,
Looking for any SoCal RX8 owners who have a catless midpipe installed. I'm considering this mod and would love to go for a ride in your car. I know the performance gains are there, but I want to see if the gasoline smell would be an issue and how good it sounds. Happy to buy you a coffee or lunch.
I'm in the LA area, but could meet up.

hey otto: PLENTY of guys around SoCal are driving around catless so it shouldn't be hard to find someone.
A few things to keep in mind:
- There are performance gains to be had by eliminating the factory catalytic converter but gains won't be huge. Maybe 5 hp or so, 10 hp tops.
- Resonated vs straight mid pipe: big difference in sound.
You should check out the monthly SoCal All Rotary meet in Cerritos, I'm sure someone will help you out.
p.s. if you want to see just about every RX-8 mod imaginable, make sure you come out to SevenStock on Nov 4th. www.facebook.com/sevenstock.

Thanks, Jedi for the info.
I know the gains are not huge, but I'll take what I can get from the Renesis.
Looks like the Facebook group is the best way to keep on top of SCAR's events. I'll definitely try to make it out, but my offer still stands if anyone wants to give me a ride before then.

otto; I might be at the next SCAR meet (I should probably look up the date)
I'm running a small 100 cpi cat (which pretty much does nothing at this point) so it's pretty close to a catless midpipe
racing beat header + midpipe + racing beat exhaust.
Let me know if no one else takes you up on the offer and I'll see what I can do.
p.s the BHR midpipe is REALLY nice.

Megan VS Racingbeat REV.V2 midpipe
ok so ive found a pretty good deal on a Megan racing stainless steal pipe for about $300 CDN. I had already planed to buy the RB Coldair and duct combo with the RB midpipe. which is about $1350 CDN after shipping and handling
I could easily save $400 by buying the Megan. something tells me I should not. a friend of mine says a pipes a pipe as well.. I'm stuck , because I would hate to have an over loud cheap tingy Honda sound on my sweet sweet 8. I need some input from personal experiences perhaps please?
thank you kindly

I don't see very many Megan Racing pipes on the forum - might be worth trying and seeing if you like it. If you don't like it, get the RB, sell the Megan for $250-300 and move on with life with a $50-100 learning experience.
As far as midpipes go - the dual resonated (to me) is the way to go. I have that paired with the RB catback, and think it sounds great at idle, great when driving, and great at high rpms (though it could be a little louder). The non-resonated one had a nice burble at idle, and sounded great at high rpms, but was raspy at anything other than idle or WOT...

I'm in whittier. I had the same concerns as you. I have a racing beat dual resonated midpipe and a magnaflow catback. The smells not too bad bet definitely noticible. it actuall sounds great. Not too loud compared to before.

its not noticeable when your rolling with the windows up. You can slightly smell it when when the windows are down. You can difinitely smell it at stoplights but nothing too bothersome unless you're by the trunk area with the car idling. I like the smell and luckily my girl does too haha.

Welcome to the club. I used to live along Riverside and Van Nuys but have moved to Reseda since January. I currently have the OEM CAT for SMOG and my gutted CAT is in the garage, if you wanna get a jist of how loud and how smelly it will be, let me know and I can loan you the gutted CAT.

For about a year after my cat burned out (there were chunks of the melted matrix in the muffler) it reeked of gas. Especially in the garage after parking it. The matrix was entirely burned out and left what was essentially a straight pipe.
After putting in a new cat, there was no perceptible change in performance. But it smelled much better and passed smog in CA.
