SF bay area help available

Continuing a tradition started with BMW friends, I am offering help to any DIYers in the bay area who would like to learn how to upgrade and maintain various parts of their RX-8 themselves.

Things I have experience with:
brake components--upgrade brakes, change brake fluid, etc.
mazdaspeed body part installs
xpel clear bra application

Things I will have experience with shortly:
sway bar installs
shock/spring installs

This is a "pay it forward" concept where I help you learn how to do things and hopefully you help and teach others in turn. So keep this in mind and ping me if you ever want help modifying your car.

We used to do this in Atlanta. I do not have a place to work on a car, but if anyone just needs an extra hand I am more than happy to help.

I have a lot of mechanical experience, BUT most of it as of late has been with piston motors. Of course, with a good shop manual there is not much that can not be figured out.

Check out http://www.armond30.com for some of the stuff the group of guys I hung out in Atlanta with work on.

PUR NRG, where are you located? I want to install new springs but don't really have the tools or driveway to do it in? Never done it before, but confident that I could with a little help...

I am in the north bay.

I live in Hayward. Swankmonkey has a great tutorial on spring/shock replacement. Besides ordinary hand tools you also need to rent a spring compressor.

You can get the spring compressor from Kragen at the rate of $6/day.

Do you really believe you will see an improvent in going to the RX7 brakes or is it for asthetic reasons? The RX8 has larger brakes stock and seems to do quite well with a single piston caliper. If you plan on changing out the brakes it would make more sense to go with something larger.

dude, it also seems that the smaller brake can stop a 255 twin turbo, and us with only single pistion will have those sqeek sound with less than 1500 mile on the car....i don't know about larger brake, but i'm pretty sure that the 4 piston FD brake can do a lot better than the stock 8 brake. i'll give it a try this weekend since i'm upgrading shocks and springs.

Do you know the RX-7 caliper mount is a direct fit on the RX-8? Ditto with the RX-7's brake rotor fitting on the RX-8's wheel hub? I have my doubts. Regardless, check out StopTech's site for articles on balanced brake systems. Even if you assume the calipers/rotors will fit what you're proposing will make overall braking worse, not better.

By my book anything done to improve looks that results in less performance is rice.

Have you tried new brake pads?

rx8spiritR, did you read the technical stuff about balanced brake systems like I suggested? If the answer is yes then please explain why you still consider putting the RX-7 calipers on an upgrade. If the answer is no then please read the articles.

i dont really recommand doin a swap from a FD caliper to an 8. the very first thing you need to worry about it's the power to weight ratio, FD weight rougly about 2850, the 8 is rougly about 3100 lb, also fd rotor 11.6 compare to the 8 is too small for an 18 inch rx8 wheel, it will look terrible with such combination, seem like you care about look more than performance from your previous post.
