SD Rev It Up Impressions and Results
I enjoyed the Rev It Up but I had a few issues with it :
1 - All automatics. NOT impressed. I just didn't feel right driving it. Especially in the schools!
2 - I wish the course was longer. Qualcomm's huge, they had enough space so they should've used it!
3 - The so-called MazdaSpeed RX-8 was disappointing
Given that I had a best time of 33.569 (Score 485). Not bad for my first ever Solo style event
I had a 33.3 in my second run but hit a cone. Oh well

I found the automatic trans very limiting - I haven't ever owned an automatic and I found the slow throttle response quite off-putting... I'm used to pressing the gas when I want to go, not a second prior... It was also my first ever auto-x type drive, so I think I have a bit to learn. I ran a 35.75x in my first run, and a 35.020 in the second, but picked up two cones (the first one a glance and the second one on the next s-bend cause I got thrown by hitting the first one) so that took the total up to 39.020 after the penalties. I have a bit to learn about this style of competition.
I think I may attend some auto-x events in the future cause it was quite fun, but I think I would probably prefer the track where the road time is much longer.
Overall it was a fun day, but the lines were long and the tracks were very short.
I did take the Mazdaspeed Miata for a test drive - it's a very nimble/agile car and I can now completely understand why the miata has such a big following, and having the top down is very neat. I hit the rev limiter very quickly though, since I forgot you can't spin these boingers up to 9k.. another 2500 revs in the miata would be useful. The car was a bit snug for me though, I found it very cramped/claustro...

Maybe that's it? Hard to tell if it's the exact same wing or not

Cars were different from Sat to Sun in the enthusiast tent. I think REV IT UP is designed for the general public to get behind the wheel of a Mazda (thus the dreaded automatic) rather than be a full on primer for autocross (but I did notice some drifting (lol). Sun in SD saw the Mazdaspeed Miata in the Enthusiast tent PLUS the Rotarynews.com RX 8 plus a Mazdaspeed Thirs gen RX 7 (about $75K worth of car) plus a show stopper Miata from Mike the mechanic. The Enthusiat tent RULED! (The Enthusiast tent was brought to you by Mazdasport Magazine). Owners cars were a great display as it showed what passionate owners do AFTER the cars rool off showroom floors. In the case of Mels first gen RX 7 on Sat 20 YEARS after! can you say BE-YOU-TI-FUL!

I'll be there at 6am -- my club is hosting this weekend, so I'll be helping with course setup.
-jd.
Hmm - unfortunately this weekend I'm supposed to be moving house, so that really throws a wrench in there...
I think my driving this weekend will be of a 19+' truck full of my belongings! Hopefully I won't be pulling too many g's in that...
Other things I need to do is get a helmet (that's a no brainer)..
Perhaps if I manage to come to life early enough on Saturday I might wander down there and say hello though, since (until Monday at least) I'm only a couple of miles away from the stadium... Chances are, though, that this weekend will be fully consumed with the move.
Thanks for the invite though, I will definately take you up on it next time.
Cheers,
Simon
