moon roof
moon roof
do you like the stock moon roof on the 8, the service guy in Mazda told me today that there is a new roof for the 8 that's not sliding out like the one we have now. It's sliding between the headliner. I havn't seen it yet, but they said there will be 2 coming in the showroom with those roof. so, the question is, do you perfer a stock moon roof that sliding to the back , or something goes between the headliners, like a integra.

I was wishing they had made an into-headliner version, like my wife's civic.
The only concern I'd have is I can't spare ANY headroom, and I'd fear the headliner version might be lower.

I'm with HeelNToe. I'd love to have a moonroof that slid into the headliner, but I can't afford to lose any headroom. I already have to have the seat all the way back, and all the way down, with the moonroof cover slid open to have enough room for my head. So I like it the way it is. I opted for the moonroof on purpose. I hate the Bose stereo, but I wanted the extra light in the car.
Totally love my moonroof and use it every single morning or when it's not so hot. Couldn't be happier with it: I had a convertible before the RX8 and hardly ever used it after the first year. Our moon roof does have a unique look - roof spoiler is funny :D Doesn't bother me at all and looks hella cool when a bunch of 8's are lined up cruizin along the road with all theirs open.
Love mine, use it everyday. You get the feeling of a convertible without the inconvenient of the road noise.
I didn't want it at first but it came with the package but now I like it. Sure you get a little of rattle after a while, but it does add to the pleasure of driving.

Was an absolute MUST HAVE when I was looking for a new car. Seriously, I really didn't want a Z or STI because they didn't have sunroof/moonroof options.
You should've seen the reaction of the sales guy when I was test driving the Mitsu Evo (it had a moonroof)... the guy asks me, "so what is the most important thing you're looking for in a car"... me.."sunroof" as the turbo kicks in and we go flying down the street... I think he probably wondered what I was doing in that car.
I used to think it was better if the moonroof went inside the roof but after driving my integra for 6 years I've found it's fine the way it is and it gives a bit more head room, very important when you know people over 6' tall.

so GT is better than sport huh.......
but i believe those who have a GT will keep most of the 8 stock as it is now, since you already have everything.
but for those with sport pakage, you'll do more modifications.
so it doesn't matter rather you have a roof or not, different people have different way of driving. enjoy the car is the most important thing.

I think it depends on the area you live in , i had to have the moonroof living on coast of South Carolina. need it on the beach to see up at the ladies hanging of the hotel balcanys..........
I dig the moonroof, have it rolled back and windows down every opportunity I get. The one drawback is the severe case of farmers tan I'm developing, may have to go shirtless now too to compensate.
The RX-8's moonroof is the smallest I've everer owned.
Try stnding up through it some time. :p
That said, I couldn't be happy without it. Every time I get out of my Miata and into a car with a solid roof, I feel like the car is caving in on me. The 8 is no exception.
I think I've had the sliding cover closed about 3 times since October.
As far as rattles go, I'll deal with them when they develop. My MX-3 didn't rattle even after 10 years of continuous use.

OMG! I love my moonroof...it's always open!! In so cal weather how could you not have it open all the time?! It is small, but i would rather have a small moonroof than no moonroof...
I'm with Loaded8...a moonroof is a MUST-HAVE when I was shopping for a new car...
I don't think a into-the-headliner moonroof will fit on the RX-8, the rear of the roof isn't long enough and is too curved...if you think the moonroof takes up a lot of headroom now, headroom would be non-existant with an into-the-healiner version.

I also love my sunroof (more positive way to think of it versus moonroof IMHO). Any dry temps above 45 F and it works great. I would also like one in the headliner but with the 8 there is no headroom to spare.
Curious to see if the rumor of a new style is true how they did it and or how much headroom they have given up.

The "sunroof" vs "moonroof" destinction, while invalid, is established.
A "sunroof" is glass and a "moonroof" is opaque. The roof in the RX-8 is actually a "sunroof".
This distinction is arbitrary, but well noted in automobile marketing literature since the '70s.

EDIT: This Ask Yahoo column says that the distinction is that moon roofs had a slideable panel where you could let in light without opening the car to the outside world.

I use the sunroof/moonroof every chance I get. Surprisingly, it does not whip the wind around inside the cabin as much as I thought it would. You can barely notice when it is open other than the sound. That said, I think the wind deflector is a waste of money. IMO there is no need for it and it breaks up the smooth lines of the 8.
not to mention the moon roof has a built in wind deflector.
also, try opening your moonroof all the way, then close it, but stop just before the glass starts to move downwards. This will have the glass basically over the area it normally sits, but open the widest in the rear section. That lets the wind roll in without a lot of noise. If you do this while driving, you'll know when you hit the sweet spot because you'll get the breeze, but the noise will suddenly stop.
