dslr lens' range from around 300 to 10,000s depending on what your're looking for

an average f2.8 zoom lens will cost you around 2 grand

an average f4.5 zoom lens will most likely be below 1000 dollars

while fstop is important you should also look at things like focus speed and image stabilization

your image quality will mostly come from better optics of the lens while the camera body will help with features like flash and supported mega pixels

the main difference between a DSLR and a regular point and shoot, aside from obvious features and the ability to swap out the glass is that DSLR photos are unprocessed while most point and shoots nowadays have built in software to adjust the image IN camera such as saturation and contrast. While with DSLR photos you have to touch up with photoshop to get certain desired effects.

Also Its great to show in RAW format

Edit: the D40 is a great beginners camera since its simpler while still being able to use highend nikon lenses, if you want to do some amatuer photography i'd suggest it or the canon rebel xt
