DMV Hookup?
I been in California for about a year. My tags have been expired for almost a year. Does anyone have the hook with someone that works at the DMV to register my car. They want to charge me $700 to register my car here. Im in the Military and drive a Winning Blue 8. Need Help. Thanks
its a '06 and i took it for a smogged and they said that they didnt have the updated version for the '06 rx8 just up to '04 so i wont need one. Im looking to pay less than $700. Thats a lot to just register my car. Someone has to have the hook here.
If you have a permanent residence in another state, you should register the car there and avoid our "Use" tax; otherwise it's what rglbegl said.

Unless I am mistaken, if you are in the military you can remain registered in your "home state". You may need to get a California insurance policy but IIRC stationed military is an exemption to the residency rules. Oddly enough, last year it only cost me $200 to register my '04.
Even if he doesn't, if it was registered long enough outside CA its exempt from the use tax.

im in the military but since my home town is CA too. i just bought the car in VA cuz i was stationed there. i just think its retarded to pay the differences in taxes if i paid the VA tax already.
Well legally speaking you're paying CA use tax less a credit for the VA sales tax you already paid. If you registered and used the vehicle in VA for the requisite time frame though the use tax gets waived. I would look at the DMV website. It does a good job of answering pretty much every question on the matter, and as a point of reference the tax rules are administered by BOE not the DMV.
