Just to be totally pendantic:

In People v. Superior Court (Simon) (1972) 7 Cal.3d 186, 200:
". . . A police officer may legally stop a motorist to conduct a brief investigation when he entertains a rational suspicion, based on specific facts, that a violation of the Vehicle Code or other law may have taken place, and the temporary restraint of the suspect's movements incident to that investigation will not ordinarily be deemed an arrest. But when the officer determines there is probable cause to believe that an offense has been committed and begins the process of citing the violator to appear in court (Veh. Code, ?? 40500-40504), an 'arrest' takes place at least in the technical sense: `The detention which results [during the citation process] is ordinarily brief, and the conditions of restraint are minimal. Nevertheless the violator is, during the period immediately preceding his execution of the promise to appear, under arrest. The Vehicle Code refers to the person awaiting citation as "the arrested person." Viewing the situation functionally, the violator is being detained against his will by a police officer, for the purpose of obtaining his appearance in connection with a forthcoming prosecution. The violator is not free to depart until he has satisfactorily identified himself and has signed the written promise to appear.'"

California in general blows in the big cities. Sacramento, San Fran., San Diego, LA, etc; Move to the Central Valley baby! Most cops could careless what you do here in Visalia, hell I bet 1/2 of them don't even know what a Turbo is.

Be careful. The cops in towns outside the cities might not know a turbo from a turban, but they do know the radar gun and how to finance local coffers. Haven't seen a speed trap in any large city (other than the temporary ones), but Vallejo, and other small towns (including, if I remember, Visalia) have been known to contain speed traps.

Ya but if you live out in the boonies, what's the point of driving a nice looking car?

Until more Rich White Males (Especially rich Lawyers, Doctors, friends of government officials) start driving rice rockets, there will always be frivolous tickets issued for import cars.

To add to my comment earlier.. think about it this way.

Corvettes... No Front Plates.. Almost 99.9% of all owners NEVER have front plates. Low as hell, I've seen some as low as 2 inch from the floor.

Harley Davidson Motorcycles... Sometimes no Plates at all, just a standard road hog sign. Loudest thing on the road. Emission hazards, noise pollution, shiny chrome that can blind other motorists.

What do these two have in common? A good proportion of the owners are White RICH male that will fight back if they get a stupid *** ticket by the cops... I'm pretty sure that's why the cops just ignore these two specific vehicles altogether.

I've personally received a ticket by the police for no front plates. A few cars were passing by and I noticed the Corvette with no front plate. (Note: This was the ONLY ticket I received when he pulled me over)... I asked him what about the Corvettes? His exact words.."We don't issue tickets for Corvettes because they cannot put the front plate on." Uhmmm... That's a first here in California, Corvettes "Cannot" put front plates? Sure buddy... instead of going more into the issue, I just sucked it up and took my ticket. I'm also pretty sure that about 3 robberies, 2 murders, and a handful of other misdemeanor crimes occured while this police officer gave me this ticket.

Around here, I think the cops would be more concerned with being shot by any of the bikers that are wearing colors. I see more Hell's Angels and other similar clubs jackets than people just driving hogs when I see hogs. Most bikes around here are Beemers, Crotch rockets, or Honda's.

So have I (3 or 4 times in my older cars). I have also gotten a ticket for parking the wrong way in front of my house (overnight) (my Durango). You break the law, you risk the concequenses (although a cop friend of mine says the parking the wrong way, was legit, but vindictive). Every time I speed, I know that if I get pulled over, there is a (good) chance I will get a ticket.

Some cars have no place to fasten a front plate, and can't be ticketed if they can't (from a cop when I got a no-front plate ticket). If there is no way to bolt one on, the law doesn't hold you responsible. If you can go to court and prove that Mazda can't provide a front plate kit, they will let you off, but of course, Mazda does give one, and the cops know it.

He pulled you over for something else, and probably decided it wasn't worth writing you up. I suspect that the way you interacted with him contributed to your getting the ticket. I got pulled over last week for passing without signalling (a low rider was doing about 55 in the left lane of 880N in Hayward (nobody for at least one mile in front of him in that lane). As soon as I passed him (doing about 72 to pass), I saw the red light and pulled over when I could. Talked to the cop. He admired the car, was courteous (as was I), he told me why I was pulled over (the not signalling, not the passing on the right, which I thought), and then let me off without a ticket. Note, I don't have a front plate (he walked to the front of the car before talking to me), and a week before, I finally got around to putting on my back plate (after 1.5 years without it).

With the missing rear (and front) plate(s), cops were behind me many times, but I never got pulled over.

The argument that "Corvettes can't put on the front plate" is certainly bullshit, no matter how we look at it.
First off, they can - they do have the place for it on the front. I even HAVE seen a corvette once (out of hundreds) that sported a front plate. But even if that was not the case, I don't think dealers could sell any car in a state that requires a front plate without supplying the customer with the means to put it on (read: bracket or mounting kit).
On the other hand, I never owned a Corvette (much less did I buy one new from the dealer), so I don't know for certain HOW do they supply the necessary bracket, but this does not change the fact that they HAVE to if it is a requirement.

Does anyone here own a corvette or know someone who bought one new?

Wrong, My friend from HS is a CHP officer.. when I told him the story, he said it's an unspoken rule not to ticket the Corvette owners because they usually fight the tickets.. and it's a hassle. He didn't mention anything about fasteners.. because they do give them to you when you leave the Chevy lot. I've checked this also.. neighbor has a vette.. and he says he will never put the front plate on. Never a ticket.. guess what race/age he is...

It could have been something else that I was stopped... but guess what. I was parked on a sidestreet when the cop gave me the ticket. I was walking to my car, about to drive off, when he stopped me. So it's pretty hard for him to give me any other ticket other than "starting a car."

I didn't say you couldn't put a plate on a 'vette, since I don't know. I do know (from the cop who ticketed me) that there ARE cars in California that can't hold front plates and there is no manufacturer/dealer provided mounting kit for them. In that case, the ticket isn't valid. I suspect that the cop didn't like the attitude of the driver so gave him a ticket.

Thanks for the extra info. If you weren't in the car, I would liken it to the case where I parked my Durango backwards. A**hole cop, nothing more. You just got the bad luck of that particular cop going by, another cop may not have ticketed you. Of course, my friend who is a cop is also a 'vette driver (and club member), so I wonder if there is any connection

I received a no front plate ticket after two years last week while my car was parked at the airport.

To add to the whole corvette thing, my brother who is a cop tells me they tend to leave people with vette alone precisely because of the profile of the type of driver. Older, mature, middle age, with money.

I guess the moral of the story is I should go buy a new C6. :p

Guy321... Notice I said.. RICH white folks :P So that would exclude most of the users here... since why would anyone that can afford a 100k+ car would buy a 30k car.

Airport is one of those places I just avoid.. it's definitely one of the places that will get you ticket for no front plate. Part of the "security" to protect us from Terrorist you know... By not seeing the front plate, it could mean we were trying to hide our identity and place a bomb somewhere. Muhahahaa.... No Front Plate= Possible Terrorist...

you know i come from washington state and we don't have all these bull $hit rules and regs, i am not sure if they will give me crap about all of this, hopefully not. i am sporting my washington plate, only on the back, no crap from the cops yet, also i have my sticker from back home that says i support local law enforcement, and to top it off i am in the military, now all i need is my lucky horse shoe that i can pull outta @$$ when i get pulled over. BTW if any of you want a sticker that says you support local law enforcement, i am hopefully heading home at the end of next week and i pick them up, otherwise i'll have to get my mother to get them and send them to me, that would just take more time.God, the rules here are made by total assclowns!

It's not called being obnoxious.. it's called the opportunities to buy a more expensive car. It's like having a billion dollars and living in Compton. With your example, the person should be happy just live in a 1 bedroom Compton shanty driving a Pinto...

I don't think your reductio ad absurdum is logically robust. The RX-8 is not a Pinto, and there's a lot of room between a 1 bedroom shack in Compton & a $100 million estate.

One of the reasons some people have a lot of money is that they don't like to waste it. Just because the opportunity exists to buy a more expensive car, that doesn't mean someone will drop the coin 'just because they can'.

Let's be more specific here: the Corvette is a $38-$45k car (invoice, and smart people don't pay over invoice). This is well within reach of a middle class person. Even if you get ripped off and pay $50k, that's still what a lot of people pay.

Personally, I will never spend that kind of money on a car again. I had an E430 Benz, and it was constantly breaking down. I replaced it with the RX-8. Good value, and not much financial risk if it turns out to be a POS.

Guess it really depends on where you live. Here in Los Angeles/OC, if a person makes over 200k+ a year, I doubt their only car would be a $30k car... and live in a modest house.

Note...There are people out there that will buy a more expensive item simply because it's more expensive. You live near Silicon Valley... you should be able to see some nice expensive cars, crazy homes, they could have chosen more modest vehicles... yet they drive nice sports cars, etc etc. They have the luxury to buy those things, and most likely they will.

I know that there are pretty wealthy individuals on this board that own more expensive cars + their Mazda RX-8... which I don't argue with, since they can afford more cars. But it would be very unlikely for that person to only own the RX-8 when they have the luxury to afford a Ferrari.

Btw, I wasn't comparing owning a RX-8 with a Corvette... my argument was comparing a 30k car vs. 100k car when the person could afford either one.

I never said ALL people would do that, just most.

Correct me if i'm wrong which i might be, but i don't think that you can get a ticket for no plate if you arent driving. Isn't that like getting a ticket if you're parked outside fyour house for no license plate, if you arent driving it how is it illegal? Or say you did have one on, you just took it off to clean it or something?
