I will buying a house in the Glendale/Phoenix area this year. My only concern is that I will have to get rid of my Black RX8. For those that live in Phoenix is it possible to drive a black in those hot arase summer months? Or is just too hot to be in a black car period?

I currently reside in Cali, so the summers here average in the high 80's.

 

Thanks for the rely abbid. 7 degrees is alot when close to 120. Anyone with black car care to chime in?

 

before i got my 8 I had a black gvr4 w/black leather and I was fine, even when I wore shorts. But I noticed I had to wash it more than my other cars that were not black simply because the sun would wear on it faster.

 

Actually once it gets of 115 it's just HOT and anything hotter doesn't even matter anymore LOL

 

I live in the Avondale/Tolleson area and have the Nordic Green, which is just about as dark as the black and I have no problems at all. Just get a job that has covered parking.... and make sure you have your windows tinted.

No matter what color car, it will be hot in the summer months.

Black paint makes no difference. Just keep it clean so it doesn't etch.
Black leather on the other hand...

I have two black Mazdas here in Ahwatukee and neither seems any less comfortable and my neighbor's white Hondas.
Tint is important, but a sunshade is even more so when parking.

 

I tested the theory of "Black being hotter than White" Well it was 121 in Lake Havasu City,AZ.
I pulled the old Infered Laser temp gun out and shot it at a Black car and it was 167 degrees,,I then pointed it at a white car and pulled the trigger. 167 degrees. Both cars were checked at equal distances. There is no differencee between black and white in the Arizona sun.

Both are just DAMN HOT!!!!

That said, I like it. You just make adjustments.
Its just the way we pay for the perfect weather the rest of the year.

 

Yeah, it was kinda warm today.
It was that kind of warm that makes you not want to do anything but stand there in it, admiring how perfect it is.
And then I went out and did a bunch of 3rd gear to redline pulls and some burnouts on Pecos.

I had a black 2000 Eclipse Gt before the RX-8. I never noticed a difference in temps between that and anyone else's car. Don't forget to crack your windows or sunroof though. If not, you'll crack your windshield instead. Now that I have the 8, this'll be my first summer in AZ with leather interior. I'm ont really worried though. My mom has a black Acura TL with leather. She's 50 and wouldn't have it any other way! Not one complaint from her. I'm sure you can take it LOL.

When all else fails, install remote start and leave the AC on.

 

That is actually a myth (though it doesn't hurt to have a bit of ventilation to keep the temps down).
Pretty much every car built since the late 70's has a device called an "extractor" built into the chassis somewhere.
On most Mazdas, it is in the interface between the trunk wall and the rear left wheel well.
Its essentially a rubber flap that keeps the air pressure relatively equal inside the car.
Without it, driving with the windows partially open would make the interior hum like blowing over a beer bottle.

 

Interesting! Learn something new everyday! So why do my ears pop whenever I get on the freeway and I put the windows up and close the sunroof? I hate that. LOL

That is the pressure equalizing. Your ears will pop (or at least you will be sensitive to) less than 0.25 PSI in pressure change.
It would take 2 or 3 PSI to pop a window.

 

bet u can stretch 'er legs more here in phoenix and surrounding areas then cali.....y would u get rid of it then?

Wot on ALL freeways. See it works like this: ADOT accelerates freeway building by 10 years. DPS has staffing plan for 10 years, but now theres more freeway and cannot accomodate. That's why scottsdale wanted cameras. Gov sees a big cash cow, ALOT cheaper and more cost effective then highway patrol, and THAT is why the State is investigating a process to implement freeway cameras.

 

Actually, the RX-8 has two, one in each rear corner of the wheel wells... (got my trunk ripped out right now for JIC coil over install

They also allow for fresh air venilation to more easily enter and leave the vehicle when your windows are all closed up!

BTW, I am quitting my job when our lease runs out, unless they buy a damn building that has covered parking this time!!! Shade is your savior...at least for slowing damage to the car... it's always going to be a bitch to drive in it regardless!

Its hot no matter what. I had a black truck before my 8 and my gf has a black toyota matrix. It was hot , but so was everybody elses cars. Make sure your tires are good, and your battery too. Youll be fine, and you wont need a pot holder to open up the door
