The Texas 8 Prepare thread

So I've been reading the Official Texas 8 State Meet thread and I've read about people installing some mods or doing car maintenance and I'm curious what everyone is doing to prepare for the State Meet.

I'm going all out, for the Texas 8 I sold my auto 8 and I'm buying a WB 6MT GT with some minor mods already on it.

Once I get it I plan to install my mods at had on my auto 8, which are: Tein S. Tech springs, Koni Yellow shocks, Mazdaspeed F/R Strut bars, Seibon CF TS Hood etc. I'm sure there's more so I'll add to this when I remember :)

what's everyone else doing?

Lord ET 02-26-2010 02:41 PM

I'll be getting some new MT90 and diff fluid. Perhaps do a coolant flush.

seatownracer 02-26-2010 02:57 PM

I'll be changing out the fluids, installing my hotchkis sways and may be picking up some Mazdaspeed struts/shocks.

Redline or Royal Purple, I'll probably do this as well along with an oil change

Lord ET 02-26-2010 03:08 PM

I'm just gonna stick with redline. It has been working well for me

JoeHawk 02-26-2010 03:35 PM

tbk 02-27-2010 09:35 AM

agcutie03 02-27-2010 12:15 PM

^^Hahaha, a spring tightener KID...hear they are renting for pretty cheap these days, should be in luck on that one. ;)

Sorry Thomas, couldn't resist

jzamarripa 02-27-2010 03:07 PM

Im gonna try to get a new engine LOL cause my ECC shaft seal is just bleeding! and I just found out today my radiator is cracked... Hey if you guys need new breaks I suggest u get some cause the practice run there was some hard braking and mad driving

WTBRotary! 02-27-2010 03:08 PM

^^^ Goodluck man, thats alot to get before that State Meet, well I guess people could say the same for me

JoeHawk 02-27-2010 09:35 PM

So, I'm still considering the mazdaspeed coils & struts, but was wondering if any of y'all have ever had any issues with having your 8 out of factory spec when it comes to Mazdas extended warranty. TownNorth service says "just say no" cuz it will void my ex. warranty... but if I'm buying the stuff from a mazda dealership that doesn't seem to make much sense.... Anyhow.. thoughts guys/gals?

jzamarripa 02-27-2010 09:41 PM

It is a lot of stuff but could be done in a week once the work order is ready, the engine should take around 2 days, i already got some shocks I wanna put on from tbk, I have coils and wires sitting around waiting to be put on, and Im gonna do a TSB to check the compression on my engine which gets you free plugs.... As long as work isn't too busy, I'll pull my car onto one of the lifts and work on it between jobs...

Well I wouldn't be surprised if they voided everything for something as small as having those clear corners on....so you'd better watch out! Seriously though, if you buy all that stuff just keep all your old stuff too. JIC you need to take it in you can swap parts back.

I seriously doubt they would void anything, Ive taken my car to Anal Hiley Mazda and they have said literally nothing to me... so shocks and springs you will be fine... :) it has nothing to do with the engine and since they are actual Mazda you will be fine... Ive read tons of stories where people have seen a AEM CAI and the dealer doesnt car, with what ive heard about Town North they shouldnt care.... Really Joe I believe your fine...

I will be doing a remedy water pump, thermastat, Bhr ignition, midpipe, throwout bearing since my new spec one went bad after 2 weeks, royal purple oil change and new summer tires. I think I want to go 255/35 all the way around, maybe eagle f1's. Any suggestions for brand would be good. I've been running all seasons, but I want to go summer since I'm buying a Benz for a dd. Which means I get to rebuild it over next winter. I think I see a Bridgeport in the future.

Lord ET 02-28-2010 07:30 PM

Got the new water pump in and coolant flushed. All that's left now is new gear oils and touching up the caliper paint.

cornholio135 03-01-2010 09:35 AM

We are taking both 8s but will drive the wife's LY on the run. Mine has all maintenance done but on the LY

MT90 trans fluid, replace both belts, maybe new tires by then...

9krpmrx8 03-01-2010 10:30 AM

Got my new radiator, rad hoses, did some maintenance and cleaning on my oil cooler and changed my diff fluid this weekend. I will try and do some interior stuff this week and possibly the dipstick light.

Next weekend I will do the tranny fluid and the Mazmart OP kit (gotta get this damn thing in!) and hopefully the rear rotary light and fender vents.

The following hopefully I can get the catch can in and grounding kit.

I just order it from www.redlineoil.com and for the diff fluid I'll prbably go with the 75W-90

renesisjim 03-02-2010 09:48 AM

Thermastat is ordered. Got tired of waiting for the waterpump to come off backorder. I want to order sways, but I think I need an MM tune for my cobb more. Although the sways would finish out my suspension. Desicions

9krpmrx8 03-02-2010 10:25 AM

MM tune. Sways can wait.

I got all my fluids from Mazda (100,000 miles many track days, always ran OEM fluids) and I believe the rear diff is 80W. I will double check when I get back home. I bought tranny and diff fluid at the dealer and I think the tranny is 75W but the diff is 80W. And i will have you know that my diff fluid was clear and it has been like 50,000 since I last changed it.

Lord ET 03-02-2010 01:13 PM

I was having major grinding issues in second and into third with the OEM transmission fluid, but when I switched to MT-90 it has stayed nice and precise ( 20k miles so far)
I'm not a hard shifter either. I push clutch to the floor and let the shifter slide in on its own.

WTBRotary! 03-02-2010 01:56 PM

3 quarts of each? Roughly? Right diff holds like 1.5 and tranny holds 2.2, right?

Just 2 qts for the tranny. I had leftovers only ordering 2.

WTBRotary! 03-02-2010 02:17 PM

^ Weird, I could swear Kyles Tranny took like 2.2 quarts or maybe more... Hmm, I'll order 3 of each to make sure

I'd like to have a local prepare meet for this sorta stuff like you guys did last time, though I def dont want to do it at 2 am before we are getting ready to leave that Friday morning....

9krpmrx8 03-02-2010 03:04 PM

Rear diff is 1.3-1.4qts and tranny is 1.8qts.

WTBRotary! 03-02-2010 03:53 PM

Thanks 9k, helps out some, I had forgotten the exact amount they both hold

Lord ET 03-02-2010 04:33 PM

Thomas, Steve and I have been contemplating taking that Thursday before we leave off to make sure everything is good to go.... however I've been having to do enough lately that I may not have to take off work. Maybe we can make it an afternoon-evening-halo sort of event. Unless somebody has some really big jobs to do...like brandon (Building car from scratch)

sisco 03-02-2010 07:49 PM

Well when I first bought the car 2nd and 3rd synchros were toasted pretty quick. Fortunately I was still under warranty and had them replaced. Then just before 50K miles 5th gear synchro also died. I had that replaced at 49,xxx mi. After that I went for about 10k miles on whatever fluid they put in at the dealership. Then I started getting a little grind in 3rd and 4th. I replaced the fluids with MT-90 and it's been smooth sailing ever since. You may have success with the shifting being smoother for a while after your fluids are replaced, but if the problem is severe enough it will persist.

sisco 03-02-2010 09:40 PM

okay i see. well i bought the car about 5 months ago and it has some kind of warranty left on the "drive train" untill july. so idk if i should take it to get checked because is its not covered im gonna have to pay for lavor. or whatever mazda told me.

i also have a squaky nosie in my transmission but it goes away when i rest my foot on the cluctch pedal.... anybody know anything about this??? (i know this is not the right thread but it would help me alot if someone knows)

throwout bearing.

Lord ET 03-03-2010 08:09 AM

Agreed with the throwout bearing. Also if you still have the drive train warranty go in there and ask tell them to look at it under warranty. But make sure it will be under warranty first. They'll have to reproduce the grinding issues to replace it, so make sure that you can show them.
