Maybe the solution is to say "SEARCH noob!.......for the stickies on the top of the forums"

And maybe folks shouldn't be so sensitive when asked to search.

Just follow the forum rules, and don't 1) call anyone names and 2) refrain from being rude, no matter what the post says. Instead of posting a "search n00Bz" post, either shut up and don't post, or say something like "this has already been discussed, here are some links to get you started" and LINK something useful. Along the same lines, if you have some kind of issue with something someone says, just report it. We'll use our best judgment to deal with whatever it is. And this includes the annoying "search noob" posts. We don't see everything, and we rely heavily on you guys to tell us when something is up.

My views on this thread:

people should search. If their question is different, they should specify why... in which case I'm glad to help, or leave them alone if I'm unable to help. The issue I have is when people come here and start a "what exhaust should I get" thread when it's already being discussed in 3 other threads at the exact same time all with the exact same question.

Outkast doesnt post things worth reading. This isnt meant to be an attack on him (at least not much of one).... but seriously. From what I've seen he posts attacks on people, asks questions he apparently knows the answer to (so he can tell everyone else they're wrong... even when they might not be), and complaining about the people on the forum who post in a certain way that doesnt coincide with his standards of posting.

that is all for now. I require food.

Ummm... people don't like to hear that either.
And that still doesn't teach them to search next time.
Lets face it, we live in a world where people like to whine, sue, and not work for anything in life.
With people like this, we have to just ignore it and move on.

That being said, most people on here have no problem with helping people if it seems they genuinely tried to find a solution themselves and couldn't.
see,

that is a bit of the problem..

i really like helping the obscure issues and the old stuff.. but if you do a simple search you get some stuff..

the secret is to do an advanced search, and select the search time to from the the beginning.. as the last year loses all the good info..

but hey, what do i know!!!

It seems like this thread was created because of the "search noob" comments posted for new people.
And from what I've read, some people would like others to give the new posts direct links to the answers instead of saying, "search noob".
If that's the case, how does it make sense to insist that someone reply with a direct link to the answer when they have to use the same search function the new poster could have used to begin with?
If the search feature was used to begin with, we wouldn't have crazy amounts of threads on the same topic, searching on a topic would be easier (not as many threads to weed through), and the new poster learns that using the search feature will give them an answer (most of the time).

I most admit... I've done many searches and went into a thread... just to get directed to another thread... just to get directed to another thread.
Anyone had this prank done to them at Christmas.... someone packs your gift in a box, within a box, within a box, within a box?
This is what you (people who want others to post direct links) want others to do.
Because one person will link to a thread (instead of saying search noob).
Then someone within that linked thread came along and said, "you should go here, its been discussed before."
Then another within that newly linked thread came along and said, "I started a thread on this same topic, go here!"
And then we've just created a box, within a box, within a box!
And your post will just become another box inside of the next box that comes along.

I remember when I was posting in a few "power steering issues" threads AT THE SAME TIME!
I shouldn't have to do that because we've created so many threads on the same topic!
In the end, even if we started posting direct links to other threads, others are going to post their experience within that new thread.
And the vicious cycle continues...
Thx.

And nycgps... you're a goon and need to do searches for the noobs!
Damn it, I hate you !!!!!!!!!!!!

^^rofl

but seriously, Im gonna repeat my point again, those who hate my comments can go ahead and spoon feed every single "how to use the dip stick" "what kind of oil should I use" "how do I make it go faster" etc.

then Everybody would be happy, right ?

Yeah, but it doesn't break forum rules and **** off the mods, which the other methods of responding do. So perhaps the best way to deal with it is just ignore them until they take the hint and go away. Look at it this way- if someone is so stupid they don't know enough internet etiquette to search before posting, do you REALLY want them sticking around anyway?

No... everyone will not be happy.
If we take the advise and not even bother posting in threads that ask questions that can be answered with a simple search, then the OP gets upset.
Here are two recent examples:

This guy waited three days before reposting back asking, "Anyone know"?
https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/cel-151830/

This guy waited two days and reposted this, "anybody???? "
https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/power-stearing-problem-151708/

Lets face it... you can't make everyone happy.

Don't forget that someone who has been here a lot knows which keywords to search for to make it easier to search. Say a noob has a question about which oil to use and searches for oil:
The noob will get tranny oil, diff oil, 2 billion engine oil threads etc. However a user knowing that the official Mazda Europe statement is to use Dexelia Ultra 5w30 can make a search for that as a keyword and perhaps directly find the thread that is relevant. And thats where we who have been here longer should take our responsibility and help a bit along the way.

And if you don't feel like helping a noob. Fine, just don't flame him. Some other user will come along and help. And if he doesn't get any help sooner or later he will leave or search.

It would be a much more pleasant forum if everyone stopped flaming noobs. Right now we have to hand out flameproof suits at the login

since when did search engine skills has anything to do with forum age ?

This is about the user's willingness to find the answer on his own or not. not keyword skills. sure his/her first try will probably end up with all kinds of oil thread, but if he/she willing to spend the time to read them, they will be able to find it quickly.

Since always. Knowing more specific keywords will always yield better search results.

I was wondering why you or anyone else are so harsh on the newbies (you yourself said you are harsh on them: https://www.rx8club.com/2538727)-post/. Why not just ignore it. Why do you open a thread which asks what oil to use when you obviously are so angry at everyone asking about oil.

It simply gives a bad climate on the forum which can be avoided. It is up to you of course if you want to answer and if it annoys you, don't answer. Let someone else answer, who might stumble upon the thread 1 hour later.

And if you feel a need to tell him to search is very demeaning to use terms like "do your own homework". There is always a polite way of putting things, and every time someone here gives an angry reply to search we all on the forum seem a bit more like ********. Is that really what we want?

I think the solution to this problem is easy:

The "post new thread" button only appears on the search results page.

Problem solved.

Or better yet, when you attempt to post a new thread, a pop-up window appears asking if they searched yet.
If they answer 'yes', then they will be allowed to post a new thread.
If they answer 'no', then they will be redirected to the Advance Search section!

Fixed it for you.

Why is this thread still even going. To Be Named later wrapped up the entire discussion in his first post.

How about new members cannot post a thread with a "?" in the title until they have accumulated 25 posts or the board software documents that they have invested 100 hours in researching old threads?

Totally agree! If you ignore it, the person who asks will eventually go away or go search. Nobody will sit around and wait for an answer for days. They will either move on or actually try searching....

Or they will get it from someone who has some patient and is willing to help even though the question has been asked a thousand times.

Why get hated unless you enjoy it...right? :D haha....

I wonder how hard could it be? they could of just type this into the search box : "which oil should I use"

and the results will come back.

The point is there are too many "free lunch" people these days that just want you to spoon feed them with info. some of them would rather wait for 2-3 days then they will "find" their dead thread just to ask "Anyone know?", they could've find the info that they need if they're willing to spend just 5-15 minutes of their time to browse around and/or search.

but nope, they just dont want to do it.

When I(or whoever) tell them to search, we were trying to save them some time. Dont u get the idea ?

wrong.

Please search :P

there were TONS of them who would rather sit & wait couple of days, then they will find their thread and bump it up with a "anyone know?" "nobody knows? come on" kind of reply.
