Reduce Spam
Here's my idea on how to remove most of the random spam suddenly on the boards.
Can a rule be made, such that only people with say, 5 or more posts can create their own thread?
This would eliminate alot of the 0 post guys coming on and slapping adds in our forums.
just an idea.
Discuss.

This would also eliminate the people in the For Sale section running scams.

Why not make it so that if you want to post in the for sale section you have to have a post count of like 5 or 10 and if you want to post after your account has been active you must view the fourms for like 3 days. Hows that sound?

Yes, I'd like to see something of that nature. I'd take it a step further - count viewed posts also (although this is easy to cheat it sends the right message). A new user should view several dozen threads before posting a new one of their own. I followed that same principle when I was a new member. I read backwards through months worth of threads in the Tech sub-forum alone.
I would recommend three hurdles:
1) image validation to join and create a new account
2) certain number of read threads before allowed to post a REPLY.
3) additional number of read threads plus minimum number of replies before enabling POST NEW THREAD.
This would eliminate spam and eliminate the temptation for new members to begin threads which have been discussed endlessly already.

i agree with this, but maybe not the 3 day rule. we seem to have someone once and while that owns an rx8 and just has a quick question and just joins to solve a matter. A post count is a great idea though.

I'm glad you agree Mugatu, I don't think three steps like those would constitute any disrespect to new members, it just helps ease them into the culture here and encourage the right behavior.

I had the same issue with spammers on my forum.
I completely eliminated it by doing the following:
1) Required one post count before being able to start a thread.
2) 10 second delay hard coded in the forum before hitting submit is allowed. If you hit submit before 10 secs, you get the preview post screen instead. The reason for this is that a lot of the spam bots can auto register and validate the email, but they create a post and submit it in one step, so the delay prevents them from functioning.
3) Installed a proxy scanner. The scanner connects (only once, ever) to a ip address, and scans for commonly used proxy ports. It then sends the command to make a remote connection. If the proxy allows the remote command, the ip is added to a ban list. This is all done in the background (forked off process) so the user doesn't sit at a page waiting for the scan to complete.
I don't even require email validation on my forum to get a username, and all the spambots have stopped.

i'll have 5 posts in no time. there is a thread in lounge now that is titled " this is great" or something where the person is saying how nice the forum is. Zoom 44 say the person is from Amsterdam like many other recent spammers. maybe he is just upping his post count to look legitimate?

bots cannot sign up to our forum- these are live real people doing the spamming. this happens once in awhile. we "the mod staff" slug awau at them with the ip ban stick until they give up and go away. it is annoying to us , very annoying to me, as well but I have much more patience then the spammer does. they will give up and then we'll be spam free again for a time. just like the trolls- keep bannign shiftzoom8 in all his incarnations and he gives up and goes away- mostly

It gets worse since there are places in china that operate sweat shops full of people who manually enter them, or follow up on email validation. Paying someone $0.60 a day means you can hire dozens and make a nice profit without trying.

The simpliest way around capatcha is to run a **** site that redirects capatcha text/graphics from a forum such as this, and used them on an entrance page that the random user must type to enter. The input it then routed from the user to the forum, and the capatcha is bypassed without any direct human contact (from the spammer) while automating the entire process.

I'd recommend this too: http://www.worldwidecreations.com/vb...ismet_spam.htm
Works well for my blog.. so I'm sure it'd work for this situation too.
