EVERY post cause IE to crash and burn

Not sure what's changed... but for the elast several weeks EVERY single post (including this one) or preview post I make causes an "instruction can't be read" IE error and then crash it closes and I have to reopen IE and start over. The posting goes through, but it's a pain  to have to go back in to the forum every time.

I've got a small network of computers, they all crash on posting. Am I the only one? Can it be fixed? Thanks.

The Mighty Red 07-22-2006 02:42 PM

I have no problem.

Try a different browser like Mozilla and see what happens. Download, install, surf.

Sounds like you might have a virus or spyware or something on your machines.

dillsrotary 07-22-2006 02:42 PM

are you using internet explorer everytime?

Spin9k 07-22-2006 02:45 PM

Yes IE each time, latest rev. With a network of 6 systems, and as it's my job, I don't have viruses or spyware on them. The only site this happens on is www.rx8club.com

Now of course just to prove me wrong... on this post it didn't crash!

So 'mostly' it crashes on posting lol.

-----

OK so when I edited the post to say that above, it crashed!

DRKSYDE 07-22-2006 05:43 PM

Spin,

Definitely try Mozilla Firefox. I can't stand IE and have definitely not had any problems with Firefox. Try it, you may be surprised!

PS I hope to make it to the Exotic car show in your back yard! Hope to see you there!

Rotary Rasp 07-22-2006 09:29 PM

I've been having the same exact problem with IE for the last 3 weeks. I downloaded opera and that doesn't have the problem. Not really a solution, but a good work around. Firefox seems to be okay as well.

\\Konig\\ 07-23-2006 12:51 AM

hmmm

if i do a quick post nothing goes wrong at all.

if i go to advanced mode a post, then IE opens up and keeps opening up windows again and again and again till i close aol...

yes im using aol.

Spin9k 07-23-2006 05:38 AM

Thanks for the alternative browser recommendations guys. I'm just wanting the powers that be to realize that something has changed, be it the board sw or IE and the incompatibility needs to be addressed eventually. Of course its easy to see the board is having other 'issues' like just staying alive, so a fix may have to wait, but as IE is so pervasive, it's still important. And changing browsers is not possible in all environments, nor should it be required to do so.

This has also been happening on my home and work laptops with IE. Thanks for bringing it up.

nycgps 07-23-2006 10:32 AM

Are you using Windows 98 ?
If yes, upgrade your OS.

If no, its one of your plugins. check and disable until you find the problem

Oh and yes, use Firefox or Opera whenever possible.

Win XP Pro / Win XP media Edition, both continually patched to latest rev of updates

nycgps 07-23-2006 11:22 AM

Latest patch ? There wasnt any recent patch that really affects the way intercepts the page codes expect for I think 1 ?and it shouldnt affect that ...

Anyway, make sure your plugins are working well and up to date.

alnielsen 07-23-2006 02:55 PM

If you are using IE, try reading the site without logging in. That seemed to work for me last time the site was having problems.
Most of my computers have Firefox installed and I use that mostly. One has that and Opera.

Not sure what you mean...not any problems reading/navigating the site... the only problem is in posting in any thread (like this one, e.g.) When I hit the submit or preview button...Bam...error. If it's the submit button the post gets posted ok, but IE crashes...if it's the preview button... of course no preview, just a crash.

Here's the error I get (got), followed by this mesaage.

That message means theres something running with IE (or IE itself) for some reason trying to write into a protected memory area , and or some memory that does not belongs to IE process.

I would suggest you to check for some unknown spyware. or maybe theres something wrong with your drivers. or Bios. could be alot of stuff.

Whoever experiencing this problem, Post your system spec out and with EXCAT error message. and I'll see if I can figure something out.

I'm trying this with IE (running in vmware). I'm doing an advanced post and all is well.

I'd check for malware on your systems - what kind of firewall/av/anti-spyware are you running? This may be an issue with Norton/McAffee, etc.

I know others have mentioned the "other" browsers and I agree - IE is old and non-compliant, it also has hooks deep in the operating system so it is great at letting malware in without your knowledge. The other browsers aren't perfect, but they are currently better.

This test worked, so the problem isn't with the site and IE, most likely it is common software on the afflicted systems....

Cheers,

Alex

You might try clearing your internet cache of any rx8club files. Don't know if it will help but is a simple thing to try. Go to Tool/Internet Options, General tab/settings, View files button, sort by location and delete all the rx8club.com files. You may want to try clearing cookies for the site, but you will lose any local settings saved there by the site.

Good suggestions, but I've done them all.
Run Spybot Search & Destroy too...
Only seems to happen with advanced posts.
Thanks!

Glad this issue was posted, it started happening to me on my home pc Sunday night. I'll have to look more closely at the error message once I get home, but do remember there's a specific memory address that was being reported, and I think it was the same one each time. I thought it happened because I had posted something using a smiley, and was speculating something from the smiley box was interfering with IE.

swiftnet 07-25-2006 03:54 PM

Please list your AV and other anti-malware

I don't use Windows natively, but I did test with XP running under vmware. I had no problem.

List all the anti-spyware and anti-virus software, we may find smothing in common amongst the afflicted systems.

I'm currently on my work pc, its behind a corporate firewall of which I don't know the name/blend, and our company uses sms and maybe altiris for systems management to propogate out AV - ours is Symantec. I'm not sure where else to look to find out more of the specifics on this pc.

edit: Also -- why is rx8club the only site that is crashing? Something must be more sensitive here now. My other IE instances stay up when this one crashes too.

swiftnet 07-25-2006 04:07 PM

Ok - we have Norton AV - anybody else wih the problem using Norton?

AirlockRX 07-25-2006 05:16 PM

The only site that I had this crash IE is here...

Using:

Antivirus:
  • Trend Scan at work (on Dell Precision Workstation)
  • AVG at home
  • AVG on my 2 laptops & 3 desktops at home
* Still crashes IE on all-

Anti Spyware:
  • None on my mobile laptop - *still crashes only here.
  • Search & Destroy on my home laptop & PC's
  • Microsoft Windows Defender on my mobile laptop

Spin9k 07-25-2006 07:32 PM

All my corporate systems run: Trend Officescan anti-v sw.
I have a mix of Windows XP Pro, XP Media Center, and Win 2000.
All crash IE on this site when posting in advanced mode.

No other real time anti-spyware, all behind a Netgear Firewall/router

RX-GR8 08-14-2006 09:18 AM

ever since i uninstalled aohell i get the same message. "the memory could not be read".

in my case the error was.

Acrobat IEHelper: iexplore.exe. Application Error

The instruction at "0x37001328" referenced memory at "0x71ab428a". The memory could not be "written". i'm going to try uninstalling acrobat then reinstalling and if that doesn't help uninstall hot fix kb883939.

FastRX8 08-24-2006 05:26 PM

Figured it out!!!

I think I know what causes this problem.

I never had this happen until today.

-----Description of problem-----
Using Internet Explorer, I try to post.
IE crashes, but the post is submitted.
If I try to edit the post, IE crashed, but the edit goes through.
Does not happen if I use "Quick Reply" at the bottom of a thread.

-----Solution to problem-----
As I mentioned, this never happened before today.
The only change I made was in the "User Control Panel" ---> "Edit Options" --->"Miscellaneous Options".

https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...id=83857&stc=1

Where you select the "Message Editor Interface", I changed the setting to "Enhanced Interface", and the crashes started to happen.
I changed it back to "Standard Editor" and the problem went away.

It doesn't fix the problem completely, but it sure beats restarting IE and going to the forum every time I post/edit a comment.

dknv 08-24-2006 05:58 PM

sample post to test this change ....

What do you know, changing to the Std editor fixed my problem too. Only thing is, I've always had it set that way, didn't change it recently when the 'problem' started happening. But, thanks for the fix idea!

Spin9k 08-25-2006 11:04 AM

Amazing ... I think you've actually found the work-around!!! Bizarre how it just started a few months ago....

Aratinga 08-25-2006 11:51 AM

I'm having the same issue at my new work PC, which is a brand-new computer running XP and IE. On my old work PC running Windows 2000 and IE, no problems... but since they've done me the favor of upgrading my hardware, I get that error message practically every time I try to post.

I'm off today and working on my Mac at home, so I'll try the fix mentioned above next time I'm at work. Thanks!

AirlockRX 08-25-2006 11:56 PM

Okay, I'm trying it... (test post). :Eyecrazy:

And it worked!
Thanks guys, it was driving me nuts!!! :wallbash:

mkztg 09-11-2006 01:22 PM

test post

I start having this same problem too, thank you for the tip.

new2me 09-11-2006 10:05 PM

u guys ever try firefox? it almost never crashes. i have been using it for years and its been good to me. just a heads up.

Don Vito 09-14-2006 03:45 PM

Firefox...it's so good, especially for web designers.

FastRX8 09-14-2006 10:52 PM

Firefox is pretty cool.
I use it at home, but I can't use it at work.

mike1324a 09-15-2006 12:38 AM

same problems. heres a test.

EDIT: Seems to work, thanks!

Just so you know, you're having registry problems and you should probably run a registry utility to clean it up. If you like IE (for some weird reason), you should reinstall it. The windows registry and IE's interaction with it is very tempermental, so I would strongly suggest throwing away your machine and getting an Apple that has no registry and won't crash on you. If you want to be a baby and keep your machine, at least install Firefox or Opera ;-)

Haha, I forgot to tell you that you do have to pass a creativity test in order to get a Mac. Dying your hair and/or getting piercings prior to the test is rumored to help :mdrmed:

Aratinga 09-18-2006 11:48 AM

Back at work on the PC (no such problems at home on my Mac)....

TESTING..... will it crash IE when I hit "Submit Reply"????

Edit: No crash! The fix works! :ylsuper:

Anyone figure out why this was happening? Just curious. Also this is a test.

I dunno.
Actually forgot that there was a problem... I quit trying to do anything fancy after 60+ crashes.

funspork 02-10-2007 08:10 PM

Firefox rules

Why? who knows... but how to fix (as stated earlier):

In your personal setting on the forum, where you select the "Message Editor Interface", make sure (or change) the setting to "Standard Editor" and the problem went away.

carbonRX8 02-10-2007 09:57 PM

So my question then stands. Why? I am often not concerned meerly with the practical issues of how to fix something, but also, more importantly, why i am fixing sumthin.

I am aware of the fix. The thing that is curious to me is that I have one computer at home that works just fine. Posts like no bodies bidness. Every other computer that I work on crashes (crashed.) I have no intention of doing anything else beyond the fix, but I am still curious.

If firefox rules so much, why is it that I personally know no one that uses it. Must be some serious shit to have soooo many users. Same goes for macs. (which, by the way, are just intel PCs in pretty wrapping.) My wife says the only way she is having a mac is if it is with CHEEESE!.

And yes, I am having fun yanking chains.

funspork 02-10-2007 10:37 PM

Firefox is open source, that is why it works better.

tdiddy 02-19-2007 01:57 PM

The fix isn't working for me. I have tried all three settings and my IE 6.0 SP2 crashes all the time. This only happens at work where I don't have the option of using Firefox. The worst part is that it does it on just about every thread. It doesn't matter if I am making a post or not. I will click on a thread, wait for it to open, and boom. I get the error and IE closes. This sucks!
