I'm pretty incompetent when it comes to searching, but I don't think this was posted before. Autoblog just posted that the Evo X is set to in fact have a double-clutch gearbox. Until now there wasn't anything more than generic rumors that it was going to have a dual-clutch setup (DSG-like) as opposed to a more traditional single clutch setup (SMG-like). And just as a note before anyone starts complaining it will almost certainly have a traditional manual transmission as well.

If the exterior stays relatively true to the concept and the interior doesn't suck complete *** I have found my next car. Hooray!

honest question, would you take that over a traditional 6-speed?? I'm not to sure, i'd have to test drive it first and think about it cuz part of me says i'd rather have the traditional version.

 

If you're asking me I'd have to say DSG mainly because I can't drive stick. I mean I'm all about learning for the sake of learning and all that, but when I get in traffic even with my automatic I want to shoot myself in the face. Knowing that I'd have to shift and feather the clutch down the highway I'm pretty sure I would go insane. I guess I could just deal with my anger and then learn to drive stick, but what fun is that.

 

Ha, ha. It's not so bad when you get used to it, although I can't say I am overly crazy about the heavy traffic. Learning a stick is pretty easy to pick up with a little bit of practice. I'm sure you'd manage fine. I don't know what kind of traffic you've got in Delaware that you would require shooting, though. LOL

 

my opinion is biase as well for never driving a dsg vehicle (and traffic does suck, its pretty much a thigh workout), but ferrari's do have it mostly with no complains so there might be something about it that i'd favor.

 

Delaware is pretty much totally awesome. I work in a town called Newark which is where the University of Delaware is. There are tons of cute chicks that are totally into me, but there's a good amount of stopping and going even if it's just for a pedestrian or stop sign.

I have a manumatic and I decided that it if I were going to learn stick this could be my "training wheels". I left it in manual mode all day just to see what I thought about having to manage all the shifting myself, even if it is just a lever. Granted I know it's not exactly the same thing, but I still hated it so much. I have severe ADD with a case of the lazies and I just flat out don't want to bother with shifting. I love pwning n00bs so I use it when I need a little boost of pwning powers, but other than that I just leave it in auto mode.

All the roads here are flat and straight with a lot of stops on my way to work. I think the 8 is the best looking car anywhere near the price, but an Evo X w/ DSG may just be a perfect fit for me. But you cats are much cooler than the people on the Evo forums (sorry Ike, it's true).

 

Unless its a beater or luxury car, I don't think I'd buy another car without a stick. I do think this DSG thing is pretty cool though.

 

Well, I can tell you this, driving stick will make you a more attentive driver and likely a better one because of it. I found myself zoning out at the wheel when I drove an auto. DSG might be nice because I do drive manual in rush hour everyday, but once you get used to working a manual, it's kinda hard to want anything else. I just feel so much more in tune with the car.

As far as manumatics go, the act of shifting is 80% left foot 20% right hand (unless you're in japan or some other RHD country, then it's left hand). Seriously. Your left foot does more than your right hand ever will and that's where all of the real finesse comes into play.

 

Sounds like someone's offering to teach me how to drive stick on their car!!

If it makes a difference I do press my left foot down everytime I use the shifter lever thing. Makes me feel like a big deal I guess.

And I think if I were going to get a stick I can't imagine having my first one being an Evo. My friend has the VIII and the clutch on that thing weighs 97lbs.

 

I got to drive an M3 with the SMG in it. I have to say, it is the best transmission. I dunno if the evo x will be just as advanced, but the SMG can snap you back into the seat with every shift if you have it in "sport" mode. there's a casual shift mode in it too which will shift slower, but very smooth. Definately spanks the **** out of the 8's manumatic. (i have the AT so I would know)

Actually, my car is a great car to learn to drive stick in. I have a performance clutch, pressure plate and lightweight flywheel. If you can drive my car, there's probably not much you cant drive.
Oh, and my clutch is light and smooth, but it will still wear you out if you're not used to it.

You know what's funny tho, the owner of the detail shop I go to drives nothing but ferraris.. he usualy has a 360 modena at the shop on weekends. Anyway, only 2 of his guys working there can drive my car.. the rest stall it over and over.. the clutch and lack of bottom end just throws them off. Oh well.

 

You should Google the difference between an SMG and DSG. DSG's have two clutches (sort of) which allow shifts to happen up to 20 times faster than a traditional SMG.

SMG's, however, still beat the crap out of traditional tiptronics (like the one the 8 has).

This i understand. I was just stating the fact that any automatic tranny with a (or multiple) clutch is great. I didn't necessarily mean that the SMG specifically was the best, just that any SMG-like trannies are the best. Sorry for the confusion.

It's not SMG like because it's not sequential which makes it far better and very different. The SMG is crap IMO, the DSG is very good, almost so good that it will bore you out of your mind. Besides, only a pansy would buy an Evo with a DSG tranny (see Saturn <not the planet>)

i don't notice shifting that much...its just part of driving. Traffic isnt a problem, its just what it is. Seriously drive around with stick and you wont even notice it after a while.

btw yesterday a valet at a restaurant remarked that this was the hardest stickshift he had to drive all day, i was kinda flabbergasted, the 8's been the easiest stick to drive for me.

 

The 8 is really simple when it comes to the throws, but people make the idiotic assumption that every sportscar they drive will have just gobs of bottom end torque and they can let the clutch out sloppily while giving it little to no gas. Do that in the 8, and it'll just plain stall.

 

Firstly, i would have to say that driving a real manual transmission car is so much different. I know because i get really annoyed at the tiptronic on my merc/porsche. It takes time to shift DOH!

I'm in asia btw.. How da hell do u people drive with your left hand controlling the wheel? You think this would make a difference in our driving styles? That said, I suck at left handers..

 

How do you guys drive with your left hand on the stick, especially when the parking break sits in the way??

 

I would think that learning to shift with your left hand would be easier than learning to use your left hand to control the wheel...

what do u mean parking break sits in the way? It does not get in the way.. Actually i find the oddly handled shaped handbreak useful in that position. The 8 does not have bucket seats.. In a corner i sometimes hold the handbreak to stabilize my body
