Aussie Wins MazTech World Final

From...Mazda Australia....

MELBOURNE MAN WINS GLOBAL MAZDA AWARD
18-AUGUST-2006

A service technician from Brighton Mazda has been recognized as the best Mazda technician in the world, Mazda Australia announced today.

In an Australian first, Mr Rod Standfast, who competed against 28 other Mazda technicians from around the world, won the coveted Best Individual Technician in the MazTech World Final.

Mr Standfast competed against individuals from thirteen other countries including Germany and Japan, traditional winners of this award, to take out the number one spot.

In the team section, Mazda Australia also finished strongly, achieving fourth place in a pool of thirteen competitors. Mr Standfast was joined by Mr Robert Ramsay from Grand Prix Mazda in Aspley, Queensland.

This is the second year that this competition has been run and it is held in high regard by technicians around the globe. Each country has two representatives, chosen from a national competition earlier in the year. The top two Australian technicians were then flown to Japan to take part in an intensive two day competition that tested each technician’s general knowledge, technical ability, precision and timeliness.

The competition consisted of both an on-vehicle and off-vehicle contest. The on-vehicle component was completed as a team and required each group to work on a car to correctly solve the vehicle’s problem in the fastest time. The off-vehicle test required each individual competitor to diagnose a variety of problems presented in different parts away from the car. Mr Standfast excelled in the off-vehicle section, achieving a perfect score in record time.

"I was over the moon! It was a fantastic competition. I was particularly interested in visiting Japan and seeing the Mazda factory," said Mr Standfast.

"Everyone at Brighton Mazda is really proud of me and it has been a really valuable experience. The MazTech competition confirms that we are being trained in the latest service technology available for Mazda vehicles and this will in turn benefit all Mazda customers."

During their visit to Japan, Mr Standfast and Mr Ramsay were taken on a tour of Mazda’s facilities in Hiroshima including the main production plant Ujina One. They also traveled to local historical sites in the region such as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima Island.

"This is a wonderful achievement for Rod and Robert. We are very proud of them and believe that these awards are a reflection of the exceptional service we promise our customers," Mazda Australia, managing director, Mr Doug Dickson said.

"Product and technical training is a high priority for Mazda Australia and I am pleased to see that this commitment is being recognised on a global level. Australians should be very proud of Rod and Robert’s success in Japan, it demonstrates that we are leading the world in car servicing."

Mr Standfast has been with Mazda Australia since 1979, this is his second time that he has reached the world final for Mazda technicians. In 2004 he visited Germany for the previous global Mazda competition.

If there were two reps per country, who represented the US? More importantly, which dealership do they work at?
