Ok, Yesterday, my 3rd, yes 3RD Proxes 4 got a sidewall cut !

I mean, my OEM tires can last me Almost a year w/o any problem. my brother's S-03 last him 1 1/2 year before replacement.

I know it has to do with your driving and road conditions and **** DOES happen .... well I know but, 3 sidewall cut within less than a year sounds ridiculous to me ! My father got his Van for 11 years and it only happened to him once ! (I know diff person , diff car, diff driving style and diff tyres ahh whatever!)

and EVERY sidewall cut is about the same area, about an inch after the contact area. I think that part is extremelly weak or Toyo didnt do enough testing and was rush into releasing their Proxes 4 in our stock size !

I dont know how to explain it but. Im done with Toyos, Looking for BridgeStones right now and will replace all 4 ! (the Toyos only has about 6K miles on them)

 

Had the same problem on my 6....Toyo's had weak sidewalls ...oh well definately still some of the best tires i've ever had

 

I bought a set of wheels once with Proxes FZ-4 (I assume this is what you mean by 4) and they were awful. Uneven treadwear VERY quickly, loud, and not very sticky.

I am going to put my deposite down tomorrow for some Bridgestone RE960A/S. This is actually the first time that I have to replace my tires with just about 6K miles on them ! (Im going to save them for my brother just in case whenever his Proxes 4 has a sidewall cut ...)

Your comments worry me, as I have Toyo Proxes 4. They were brand new when I purchased the car. I have had no issues with them so far (knock on wood) and I do some spirited driving with them. I wonder how bad/good they are in the snow...

 

I know tons of people that have Subarus that swear be the Proxes 4 tires...and have heard nothing but good comments...I think all around they are excellent tires. Sorry for your bad experiences. They are really good in the snow...at least with AWD

 

i think it's due to all the garbage. go get some t1-r.

 

Im not complainig about the traction, its pretty good I know(I used them in snow)

Im complaining about the sidewall of the tire was build with "weak and thin" in mind. the result is that a small little bump on the side will result in a flat out tire thats not repairable.

and I think 3 of the same tire with same sidewall problem is not a "you are so lucky" kind of thing, its more like a design fault. Oh well, Im done with Toyos and no more.

 

I also got T1R 's on, and so far no problems. now on 17000miles (27000km) and treadwear looks good, should do 45000 - 50000miles.

Actually I was very displeased with the T1-R's performance. If you search for T1-R reviews on this forum, you'll find other owners who were less then happy. (Especially if they tend to drive aggressively, ie DE's/autox)

If you are looking for a performance > noise/comfort/quality tire, avoid the toyo lineup. Their sidewalls are soft across the line, and their recent addition, the Toyo T1-R, was specifically designed around reducing road noise, and improving ride quality...NOT improving performance. A good street tire, but not a good performance tire. Compromises don't make anyone happy.

Having owned both T1-S's, and T1-R's, I'd have to say the T1-S was a superior tire, but only when compared to other Toyo tires. If you want superior dry traction, go with a Hankook Z212, or Falken RT-615. Just don't complain about tire wear or road noise.

It also should be noted (though many people fail to realize this) that the words "all-seasons" actually mean "shitty tire you don't want on your sports car". If you want dual duty tires (snow/summer performance) then buy two sets of tires. You'll never have optimal traction with a compound designed across a wide temperature range. You'll just get "acceptable traction." And if you were happy with acceptable...why did you get an rx8 instead of a camry?

Buying all-seasons for a sports car is akin to spending thousands of dollars on an HDTV plasma tv, and then not paying for the HD tv service.

I want to get another set of wheels Just for Summer and leave the stock wheels for Winter. but the thing is that I cannot afford another set of wheels atm ... at least not until next summer I think. and 8 is my daily driver.

So I have to compromise something ..... and this is the result.

I did NOT know the Toyos have softsidewalls(my fault, didnt research long enough) its really disappointing that I got 3 cuts and its all sidewall, around the same area and its just a tiny little cut and the rubble just *poof*.

Sigh ... thats already 600 bucks ....

Im going to install the RE960A/S tomorrow, I have good experience with Bridgestones so ..... wish me luck !

 

Honestly I think your sidewall issues are just bad luck and have nothing to do with the tires themselves. When I say "soft sidewalls", I'm talking performance wise, not cutting/piercing/poking wise. When a tire has soft sidewalls, it means it's performance is targeted more for someone who is concerned more about ride noise and quality then performance.

Tires with stiffer sidewalls tend to be noisier, and ride harsher then those with soft sidewalls. As far as I'm aware, all all-seasons have soft sidewalls in this regard, as if individuals were concerned about performance, they wouldn't be buying all-seasons in the first place.

Everybody loses in a compromise!

 

If its my first sidewall cut, I will say it has to do with bad luck.

The second time, I was like ... hmm ...

Now, the third time. Yes Im completely pissed. And sorry theres no more Toyos for me for the rest of my life.

Honestly, At first I was expecting good results from Toyos, Yes I have to stick with all-season for now but I was expecting alot from them (over the stock dunlops)

The result was, its about the same as the Dunlops, except that I can drive in light snow.

Im about to go change my tires in about an hour or 2, will try to snap a picture to show where the cut is (so does my second one, I already threw my first one away)

*In the mean time, Im saving up for another set of Wheels ...*

 

I have Proxie 4s. No problems with them....yet.

 

I've read people suggesting the 615s are much quieter than OEMs - am I crazy, and DIDN'T read that? or are THEY crazy and just have bad hearing?
