I live in Germany and regularly drive in excess of 120 MPH on the Autobahn. Recently while on the autobahn the plastic cowling that runs from the bottom edge of the front airdam to the wall behind the radiator/air conditioning condenser coils (? not sure what the part actually is?) came loose and ended up being ground off by friction with the road. I wanted to know if anyone could tell me if I can run the car without this cowling or if it really needs to be there to direct airflow to the radiator/coils and underneath the car. Additionally, is there a better than stock replacement for this cowling since this one doesn't seem to be able to hold up to high speed air flowing across it. And, if I can run with it removed, should I purchace some sort of protective screen for the coils. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Let me start by saying, I don't know the answer to your question on whether or not you can run with it off. I guess the real question is what effect does that have on cooling?. You could connect a real water temperature gauge an test it yourself. I suspect it is there to direct the airflow and perhaps improve overall aerodynamics. Probably cheaper to buy the replacement part though.

Usually the black plastic is used as a bump indicator.

It warns the driver when they are going too fast, such as into or out of a drive way.

 

There are numerous screws & plastic rivets that hold it in place. If someone doesn't install it properly it can come loose. Hitting a curb, steep driveway, or something on the road can damage it and cause it to come loose also. Running at high speed won't cause it to come loose if it's not damaged and installed properly.

Yes, replace it with a new one. You'll probably need numerous screws and rivets to replace those that are likely lost now.
