grinding in reverse please help

grinding in reverse please help

I'm really **** about warming up my car, so I let it warm up for almost 5 min. befor I drive it. When I park my car and try backing out of my carport, going into reverse I grind. I always try to make sure the stick is in gear, and still I grind. This problem has only started happeing about a year after I bought it. I try not to force it to hard, but thinking that I put that much power into it, it should go into gear. It's really pissing me off, because i'm sure it's happen over 20 times. Has anyone had this problem? I tried searching, and found nothing. Do you guys think I should just take it into the dealer? I don't want to take it in because it dosen't happen everyday, and i'm scared they're just gonna tell me nothings wrong. It's not like I don't know how to drive stick, I been doing it for 8 years now.

I have the problem too that i sometimes cant get the reverse in completely. Sometimes it is the same with first gear too. What i do is that i put in some other gear (usually second) then the first works like a charm.

I got it explained to me that it had to do with the synchronization rings in the gearing that prevents you from going from one specific gear to another (especially if the car is standing still).

Disclaimer: Im not certain about any of this, but i think this is how it is.

It's ture about the gear syncro. But even in you force it, it's not that hard. I'm almost 100% sure that going stright into rev. should not have that problem. grinding really sucks

I've had grinding in "reverse" before but I found that each time I had been rushing. Because of the rush I could have easily not pushed hard enough and gone to 6th causing the engine to rev and consequently grind when the clutch is being released with too high of a gear (just a guess). Basically whenever I take my time, though, I'll hit R for sure. Seemed like a similar sound, could easily be caused by somehting else, I'm just guessing

try putting it in a forward gear first then make the shift to reverse and see if it still grinds

I have only grinded in reverse and that was because I didn't put it in all the way. I would say do what team said because of the ABS you might have better luck by going to gear first.

^^ sounds good guys. Thanks for the info, i'll try that one out and see if it works. do any of you go into gear first as well? I just thought it was strange to have to do that, because I never have.

Reverse has no synchro so grinding can happen especially when cold (the transmission can be cold even after the engine's warmed up). All the forward gears have synchros and should not grind. Might want to try changing transmission fluid.

Ahhhhhhh!!! that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for that bit of info, I'm gonna try that out.

You should feel 2 clicks if reverse gear is hooked up.

i put it in to first before going into reverse. I used to have the same problem, but since i started going into first, first it does not happen to often.

i think the problem with is due to the additional gear for reverse. Just like yiksing said, you should feel 2 clicks when putting the gear into reverse.
When the teeth of the gears are parallel to each other, it's basically stuck, you can't go all the way in. By putting into other gear, you expect the gear will rotate and not aligned with the reverse gear.

the grinding used to happen to me in my camaro. What I did which helped alot was putting the car in either 3rd or 4th gear I forget exactly which, not letting go of the clutch. and then directly putting it into reverse.
this helped to get rid of the grinding I used to hear.
