Question Gearbox ratios

Anyone know what the stock gear ratios are for a 2005 (6)MT?

And while we're on that, anyone tried tweaking them at all? Particularly the low end?

Thanks.

As for Tweaking, other than changing the tire sizes there are few threads on doing that. You can change the rear end ratio either above / below the stock 4.44 but that is costly.

just so u know if u try changin ur gears at all in the tranny they void the warrantee, on top of that when mazda designed the 8, they setup the gear ratios to work perfect with each other, n even if u tweak with one gear, ur acceleration in that gear will be fucked up, possibly throwin off all ur gears.........just to let u know

The gear ratios may have been selected to cut costs or meet emissions targets, rather than maximize performance. Aisin might have cut them a sweet deal on the price of the transmission, but only if they used off-the-shelf ratios. Or perhaps Mazda was scared to make the 6th any taller, since someone might try a passing manuver without dropping down to 5th, and then their family sues when they get killed.

1-2-3-4 gears are nicely spaced, but are too tall. 1st gear can take you up to 35 mph and 2nd can do 60 mph. In a car that has 138 ft.-lbs. of torque, that seems kind of tall.

Then you shift to 5th and it's only a 700 RPM drop, then you shift to 6th and it's a paltry 400 RPM drop, almost not worth making. Freeway cruising speed yields 4,000 RPM's. So we have a transmission that is too-tall starting out, and too short while cruising. I thought the whole point of having a 6-speed was that you have enough ratios that you don't have to have a tradeoff between in-town and freeway driving. It's like we have a 5-and-a-half speed instead of a 6.
