Hmm , well, serviced my car today. just curious and I asked the dealer about how much it cost to install the Clutch and Flywheel (I said Flywheel first, but then the service advisor was like why not clutch? so ok, both)

They want 560 for Labor, Parts they said if I pay by Cash I can get it lower(They told me MSRP price first, then they said they can lower it)

Hmm. Im just wondering, does it HAVE to be a dealer install ?

I was thinking of RB's Flywheel and maybe ACT Clutch.

Last question, I read it somewhere that our 8 in the USA market are in fact using MazdaSpeed Japan's Clutch. IS that true ? (I dont really think so tho)

If no then, anybody here has the JDM's MS Clutch installed ?

A DYI job will take two people ~ 6 hours. That's about how long mine took, using an ACT Flywheel & MS Clutch.

The clutch takes more foot pressure, but you do get used to it. I like my set-up quite well, and is the best mod I've done thus far.

 

which dealer did you go to?

 

I had my transmission worked on at the dealership (syncro problem). I assume the labor should be about the same. They wrote it up for 5hrs @ $455.

 

I checked with Great Neck Mazda. I think I can get them to lower the price.

Is it hard to do tho? I read the DIY part but I never had this kind of experience before and Im really afraid that Im going to "fudge" something up. :-(

 

A clutch & flywheel job usually takes 5-6 hours by the book, but a pro shop will only takes 3-4 hours. You don't need to take it to dealer, but you need to take to a shop that have 2-1/8" socket to take the flywheel nut out. Ask around to see if there is a shop that work on RX7 or 8.

 

I know I dont have to take it to the dealership, cuz I think most of them "almost always" overcharge people (I might be wrong, but ahh, I said MOST, not all)

I did shop around and theres hardly anybody that I asked worked on the 7 before. 8 ? Nobody.

One shop even said they never seen an engine like that, is it a 4 cyclinder ? lol

The other one worked with some FD before but he said its been a while ago (at least 5 yrs ago)

but does it really matter ? I mean its just transmission. Should be all the same rite ?

 

Almost everything in the flywheel & clutch swap is basic 'by the book' stuff.

The 2-1/8" socket is needed.

The only other unique item is making sure the PPF (Power Plant Frame) is correctly re-positioned, since it has to be removed for access.

 

The transmission shouldn't be that hard to remove/reinstall by yourself (the clutch/flywheel combo shouldn't be that hard to get out/in either) as long as you have the right tools. Make sure that you want to do it before you get started though as (I'm assuming it's your first time doing this sort of work) you will probably run into a few "WTF is that?" situations.
