Sales in Australia of Australian-Made cars slump 20%

http://www.theage.com.au/news/Busine...836409275.html

Overall, Toyota was the top selling car company last month with 14,383 units, ahead of Holden on 11,503 and Ford on 7,435.

Mazda did best among the importers with 5,384 units while Mitsubishi slumped to eighth place, outsold by Mazda, Honda, Nissan and Hyundai.

Despite a slide in demand for its locally built vehicles, Holden still had the top selling car in January with Commodore sales hitting 3,551 compared to 3,212 for the Toyota Corolla and 2,630 for the Mazda 3.

Other leading sellers were the Ford Falcon (2,621), the Toyota Camry (2,142), the Hyundai Getz (1,906), the Toyota Yaris (1,833), the Holden Astra (1,767), the Honda CRV (1,501) and the Honda Accord (1,407).

2002,2003,2004,2005 All have been record TOTAL car sales, sales of all cars are still going very strong.

Yeah, the Aussie built stuff has slowed, partly because of the the price of oil, as we all have experienced, fuel here is about 25=30% more than the US.

So, the big Aussie built cars have taken a hit.

Also both Ford and Holden's are very OLD and tired models, the same basic shape for 10 years or more, just a face lift here and there.

Holden's all new Commodore here late this year, Ford Falcon next year.

The big disappointment has been the brand new locally made Mitsubishi 380 (3.8 litre FWD V6) or your Galant, in the 3 or so months since release sales have been very poor, they were looking to make around 3,000 a month, the best in sales I think was 1,600s.

I am really concerned that the plant here in my home state could fold, if this car does not make it, I think Mitsubishi were hoping for WHEELS COTY, but the MX-5 won. The 380 was in the list though, I think trim quality and fit let the car down.
From what I have read, most commentators say it's a very well sorted car, and at the moment the best out of Ford, Holden, 6 cylinder range..
