That was impressive til I saw that they sold a whopping 10,000 units to achieve this, and beat out Vauxhall and Hyundai to win. Good job Mazda you and your two "sportscars" beat the Tiburon... People in Europe buy hothatches when they want something fun and sporty more times than not, I wish that would catch on in the US

I'd also like to see what they are classifying as a sportscar... Is the Boxter a sportscar or a roadster, how about the Z4, what about the M3, what sportscar does Mercedes Benz have??? Keep in mind VW will most likely sell about 70k Golfs in the UK this year, 7x that of the Miata and RX-8 combined. That's just one example...

i wonder if they count evo and wrx etc. rally cars sell huge over there. eitherway its impressive for mazda to beat out the european companies on their own turf.

Australia has a "whopping" 6.7% of the population of the United States.

So, to match those Aussie sales, Mazda would have to sell 150,000 RX-8s and MX-5s in the USA, annually.

(I wonder how many Evos were sold there?)

But he isn't talking about any of the countries that the article talks about. THe article was about the UK, not australia. The UK's population is around 60 million and for his comparisons sake, the US around 300 million. So, Mazda would have to sell 50,000 units per year in the US to match the sales total per population.

The UK has about 20% the population of the US, and I'm just going out on a limb here to say that the CAR/HUMAN ratio is less. A lot of the population is centered in and around the London area and most people take the subway.

So 10,000 cars is actually not that bad, IMO.

BTW, what is considered Fords sports car in the UK???

Talking about the absolute number of Mazdas (RX-8s and MX-5s) sold in any country is not the relevant issue. The market share is.

Mazda owned the UK market. It's a highly competitive market in terms of available brands.

Ike seemed to focus on absolute numbers, rather than market share.

So, what conclusion are we supposed to draw from the fact that the RX-8 had the highest number of sales in the "sports" category? I also like how the Honda Insight is considered a "sports car".

for the 2004 figures in the pdf you can conclude that in the UK the RX-8 was the top seller in its segment and that the Miata was not far behind. And that Mazda has a huge market share in that segment in the UK.

i thought that was obvious? what else would you conclude?

Actually no, it would appear that in 2005 the Vauxhall was the best selling car in the category.

I'm pretty sure the Golf usually outsells the entire Mazda lineup. Couldn't find the most current numbers in a quick search.

Golf UK sales 72,362 in 2002

"Mazda Motors UK achieved a record sales year in 2003 at 38,841 vehicles, 34 per cent ahead of 2002",

I think they sell 10-15k Mazda 3s a year in the UK, even with a design change the Golf most likely topped that mark by quite a bit.
