Does anyone know what the duty charges are to ship stuff to Ontario from the USA?

I was thinking about ordering some items from Racing Beat and I want to firgure out the total cost of shipping.

 

Tell your shipper to send the item as a gift or sample. This way it will by duty-free you might just have to pay some customs fees if your using UPS or Fedex. Check to see if your distributor will do this for you.

 

UPS notorious for feeeeeeeeeeeeeeees...

 

If the items originate within the free trade zone (made in USA) they should incur only tax, (the GST and PST).

If they come by mail, customs charge $5 per parcel to look at them, then your tax is added, and you pay at the Post Office.

Fedex and UPS both charge $30+ to do the same paperwork, and then charge tax as well. You pay at the door, or they may send you a bill later. If the item is marked $20 or less, it may get thru untaxed.

....and no one is going to believe Racing Beat is sending you a birthday gift.

If you phone Racing Beat and ask them to ship via US Postal Service (USPS) they will, they did it for me. It's handy also because you can pick your stuff up at a local postal outlet and you just pay the two taxes, there might be some other small handling fee in there but it's nothing significant. There is no duty on car parts originating from the US. RB ships UPS by default and you will get raped on brokerage fees if they do that, at least $30-50 has been my experience.

I bought a Revi intake, A/C condenser screen and oil cooler screen package back in the spring. Took a little while to get as demand outstripped supply on the Revi at the time. If you are thinking about the oil cooler screens I would paint them black or they will look strange. I used u-Fix-it black satin trim paint that is made for aluminium, stainless steel and plastic trim on cars, seems to be holding up OK, Canadian Tire sells it. If you are looking at a Revi, I was a tad methodical installing mine and it took more than the time estimates you see. The fog light connectors were annoying to remove because you can't easily see how to unlatch them, there are no instructions on disconnecting the headlight washer hose although it is obvious. I also took other peoples advice and taped over my headlights to avoid scratching the lenses. I also did a better job of supporting the wiring to the MAF than was indicated in the instructions as the wires are tiny and will easily break with any sort of flexing. All the stuff I bought was well made and there have been no problems and no regrets. Hammering the gas with a Revi on there puts a smile on your face, the car should have shipped like that. It is a bit beyond me why Mazda went to such huge lengths to try to quiet the intake on the car as much as they did, that VFAD thing is a mad science project . . .

"just GST" if you are lucky enough to live in Alberta and never pay PST. PST or HST is collected when you import stuff into provinces that have agreements with the federal government for collection of the tax at entry points. That came into effect a few years back and only a few provinces signed on at the time, Ontario was one of them. Auto parts are definitely covered under NAFTA if they were manufactured in the US, even some German origin car parts I have ordered from the US came in with no duty, don't know if I was just lucky there or not . . .

 

That's what the free-trade zone is all about -

The German parts would have been duty-paid when originally imported. The guy who brings them in pays, marks them up, then they travel thru "the zone" freely.

Come on over to Alberta, pay just the GST!

I have made two orders from the US and have had nothing in regards to tax or duty. Both were mailed via US post I believe. One was a car cover and the other was clear bra.

 

Customs doesn't charge $5 to look at your package.... its a postal office fee. The cheapest way to send your package is through the mail system..if Customs can collect more than $3 in taxes then they are suppose to ...gst and pst. No duties if your part is made in North America or Mexico. Stay away from Fedex and the other couriers. They tack on $30 or more. And Stealth is right...Customs won;t believe you;re getting a gift from a parts place.

 

The post office is always my first choice.
The 30 fee fromUPS/Fed ex is the minimum charge.
You do however have the option of clearing your own parcel from customs.
Once you have a tracking number from the shipper you can notify UPS that you will broker your own package.
They call you when it arrives, you go down and pick up the paperwork and take it to customs.
Most courier wharehouses are located close to airports, and customs offices.
Once you pay your duty and taxes, customs will stamp your paperwork.
You take the stamped papers back to UPS and get your parcel.
UPS makes it sound like they are doing you a big favor.
It takes about half an hour.
If you forget to phone UPS before your parcel arrives you can also refuse delivery at your house, stating you will broker your own parcel.
I ordered a book from the US, and UPS wanted to charge me 28 dollars brokerage.
i said no to the driver and cleared my own parcel.
