Got Smoked by a Ford Super Duty

Literally -- A lifted F-350 duelly was behind me getting off the freeway today. I took the off ramp a bit fast and when he caught up again I guess he felt the need to show off too. The truck had to be heavily modified because just as it passed me it belched out the biggest darkest plume of black smoke I've ever seen from a pickup and the truck was gone (wicked fast). I was in the dark for about 50 ft. All I could do was smile and envy him knowing as modded as his truck was he doesn't have to be concerned with SMOG regs. at least as long as he doesn't get popped showing off.

Not surprising. A Chip'd Power-Stroke Super-Duty can put down over 1000hp. All they've got to do is reach over and flip a switch, literally, and they can beat the ever-loving pants off almost everything on the street, then flip it again and go right back to towing.

The Dodge SRT is mean too, a guy wanted to play before i was turbo, he broke the wheels loose at 45 mph! I kept up but really was scared to pull up beside him, did not want to get embarassed! That truck hauls butt! Not sure how it would do against a turboed 8 though with us being lighter.

I've played around with a few SVT Lightnings, they are pretty quick IMO. What do you guys think about them?

A truck made to go fast serves no purpose.

Around here the big thing seems to be chipping diesel trucks. They are fast and can't hold their lane so don't get into the twisties with them.

SRT10 is the fastest Truck out right now--production wise anyway. SRT10 is easily faster than regular RX8s (as well as 350Zs and Mustang GTs) and more times than not it will beat a greddy RX8. Its got 500HP V10--and manual tranny--the SRT10 Quad Cabs have a 4speed auto and are heavier so they are a little bit slower--so a turbo 8 might be able to keep up. I like the SVT Lightenings--those things are fast as well--not as much so as the SRT10; but definately mid to high 13s in the 1/4 all day long. The thing about those SVTs, just like Mustang GTs, and LS1 Camaros--its cheap and easy to get power out of them; so most of the ones you come across now are modded. As far as diesel trucks go--they are turbocharged so chipping them and playing with the boost goes a long way.

Logically enough, it's called smoking. From what I've gathered, diesel guys like to smoke imports, especially new show-off "fast" cars or ricey Civics. You know, teach 'em a lesson kinda thing...

To each, their own.

I've heard one around here with a very high pitched whine that was also insanely fast, I think it was a shop truck or something as it had stickers all over..maybe it was just redneck rice..either way it was fast as anything and hauling **** through a turn. :D silly people

I wonder if chipping them reduces reliability.

You take a truck from 400hp/600tq to something like 1000hp/1200tq that I've seen some of those trucks do, you can be pretty damn sure you're going to reduce the reliability.

Seems kinda stupid to me, giant truck, high center of gravity, and lets make it really fast. Oh, with stock brakes. Great f'n idea.

I hate that SUV makers are advertising these big vehicles to be fast, the new land rover, the X5, the dodge SRT truck, the Jeep SRT that they are coming out with. Just gives the driver more reason to ride my *** on the freeway. To me, it is very irresponsible on the part of the auto makers.

My two bits.

well the sad thing is most of the people who will be driving these monsters will be going about 10 under the speed limit in the left lane while on a cell phone without a care in the world, I always see such hugely overpowered cars being driven by such hugely underpowered drivers

Its not the going fast part that bothers me, its the stopping fast part!

I own a 4x4 powerstroke, non-chipped, and it is pretty fast and actually doesn't handle that bad on curves. But after driving the 8, I do remind myself this is only a truck

true, but you get the rouge power junkie, who drives it like it was a Ferrari. Those are the ones that scare me, I can go around the guy on the phone.

Who cares how fast these trucks go. Have them get on any mountain back road (here in the NE would be anywhere in West Virginia) and see them fall off the mountain rolling their fat trucks over trying to keep up with the nifty RX-8 on those super curvy roads.

Without curves - RX-8 drives not much faster than your typical car.

With curves - RX-8 RULES THE ROAD (except maybe for a mini which also hugs curves because it sits on a perfectly square balanced set of wheels, but they look real dinky)

Hey, many of the those superduty SUVs will be in the graveyard in 5 years due to:

$7 per gallon gas price
4x4 abuse
rollowers (I cannot count how many accidents I've seen with a rollover SUV/truck)
etc. etc. etc.

The RX-8's rotary can be modifed to handle biofuel and/or natural gas/hydrogen (they have done both succesfully in Japan)

My point is not that we can out run them in the mountain roads, and not on the freeway, but that they are dangerous, and there is no need for a 400 HP SUV or Truck, unless you do some serious towing, work on a farm or construction. But most of them are urban dwellers, and all they tow are their 2.5 kids and the wife.

I have a friend that has a dodge duley, turbo-diesel.

5" Turbo-Back Exhaust (no restrictions)
Uprated fuel system (pump, injectors, ect)
Uprated Turbo
Lots of work done to the cars heads (stock bottom end)
ECU reprogram

Im not sure on the power but it is running 92PSI of boost with propane injection.

last time he was out at the track he ran right around 14 flat @ 100mph I think.

its slow off the line, but starts going about 1/8th mile mark. pretty good for a redline of 3500rpm...lol

those trucks can be sooo fast...its crazy

Agree, and also; we thought the RX8 is bad on gas...

Last year I bought the wife a Cayenne S and she was averaging 12 MPG, 14-16 on the highway and 8-10 in the city, I got rid of it 6 months later...

i think that if you aren't a good driver, you could wreck a ferrari on a straight-
i don't care for these big trucks either, but i wouldn't blame it on the automakers. Accidents are cause by bad drivers not by what they are driving.

there's nothing wrong with buying a truck that can haul *** and maybe a matress or some 2 x 4s once in a blue moon. i mean, the rx8 has child safety seat holders, and minivan owners aren't complaining to us saying "why would you need such a fast baby hauler"-i say this to only show that there's no harm in extra utility.
just my opinion
