Third repost: Almost got run over by a white
It seems there was a problem last night with the site's database (or at least that what the messages received after posting my previous messages said) and my post has not been uploaded in the first two attempts. Here's the story: Saturday around 4:00 PM while riding my road bike on Bayview and 16th I almost got run over by a young guy driving a white RX8...He squeezed between me and the next lane and came dangerously close to my handlebars. As soon he passed me he accelerated hard just to make a right turn at the next stop light. A couple of weeks ago a lady driving her Corola slapped my thigh and then my hand with her right side mirror, that's how close she drove by me... All this happened while I was doing over 40km/h. Toronto drivers have no respect what so ever for cyclists. Almost every time I ride there's got to be some impacient driver honking their horns at me to get out of their way and trying to squeeze me into the curb.
On this issue, I will agree with both Justin and Sabennett. Yes, Drivers do not respect cyclists who are on the road, and that goes for the motorcycles aswell (I know) but on the other hand, 90% of the time when a cyclist is riding on the road, there is a sidewalk that they could be using. Ya ya ya "we're soposto be riding on the road blah blah blah. There is no cop that will give you a ticket for riding on the sidewalk.
I've seen both sides of this happen regularly.
All I'm gonna say on the matter is that the roads are getting more dangerous by the second, due to eratic drivers and most bicylists don't obey the rules of the road.
As for anything on the road, knows what's around you at all times and be defensive.
Ex. I had one guy tailing me this morning doing about 75km/hr and about 4feet of my rear. So I got out of the situation. My philosophy on the road is "Don't trust anyone!"
