Stereo just stopped working . . .

Hey,

I have the Bose 9-Speaker system in my car. I went away on vacation and came back a week later - the battery had died so I jumped the car. Now the stereo doesn't work. Any ideas?

take it to the dealer. most likely what happened is that when the battery died, the radio lost all memory. what happens with a lot of factory radios is that they have a security code built into them so that if power is removed from the unit (ie. radio is removed from vehicle) the radio will lock up until such time as the security code is reinput into the radio. i am not sure if the 8 has that built into the radio or not, but the dealer should take care of it

No security code in our radio, the damn thing is so proprietary no one wants it

Try the fuses. Same thing happened to me. Once they were replaced all was good.

I know absolutely nothing about fuses and electronics - how can I check them and what should I do to them?

The stereo seems to function - its displaying stuff and the volume changes when I press the button up or down - there's just no sound.

then it is either the output on the headunit to the factory amp, or the amp itself is no good or like dazygirl said, it could be the fuses. if you are not comfortable with trying to check the fuses yourself, take it to the dealer and have them fix it. unless you drove the hell out of it and have a gazillion miles on it, your warranty will cover it

I could very well be wrong, but the EXACT same thing happened to me and it was the fuses. My battery was dead for 2 months after a wreck and the radio didn't work on my first test drive after the repairs. One of the fuses was blown, allowing only 6 volts to flow rather than all 12. Take it to the dealership if you don't feel comfortable repairing it yourself.
