I don't think I've ever purchased the extended warranty for a new auto. However, I'm thinking about it for the 8, since it's a first year model. I'm still skeptical, though, of needing a repair at some point, and the dealer sayin' "sorry, that's not covered under the warranty".

Anybody else have opinions about this?

 

Doesn't it come with a four year warranty? IMO, no need for an extended one b/c I'll prob get a new car in four years anyway.

 

Up here, the warranty is only 3yrs/80,000 km . But I agree, on my current ride, I took the extended warranty but when I tried to put a claim through for a broken headlight seal (condensation inside the lense), it was denied because they said it was not covered by the extended warranty. I was at 61,400 KM (basic warranty was 60KM). I freeked, but the service manager wouldn't budge . When my lease was up, I went in to buy it off and the sales rep was trying to sell me the new TSX. I simply laughed. I asked " why in the world would I buy a second car from a dealership who pulls **** like that". Thank god it was only for $400. I can just imagine what would have happened if the repairs was for something a little more major.

I am torn between buying the extended warranty because it is a new model and risk that the warranty will actually cover the cost of repairs or do like Omegabob and ditch it after 3 years.

 

basic warranty is 4 years 50,000 mile. soome to be fine with me. i will prbably buy a new one in 3-4 years anyway, especially if the rx-7 comes out in 3-4 years like everyone says it will.

 

No extended warranty for me. I trust Mazda engineers have gotten it right; IF there are any "teething" problems, the factory warranty should cover them.

I plan on driving the car until rust do us part. (incidentally, I haven't heard much about anti-corrosion measures!)

 

I've had good luck with extended warranty. Typically I put way more mileage on though and that expires the factory ones. It's also helped on the resale value on the cars I've sold or traded. People seem happier to find there's still a bit of a safety net and it seems to make them feel it's been maintained better. Not sure it's cost effective in that respect. It has been cost effective for me because I got a new short block out of the one on my Talon. 'Course you do need to read the fine print first.

Oddest thing was my Miata being covered by Toyota for the extended warranty.

I haven't decided yet on this vehicle, but I'll probably go with it because I expect to go through that 40 or 50K miles in about 2 years and I'd like a longer coverage period. Sure hope Mazda is going to back it up this time. Frankly that's one of my biggest gripes. If Hyundai can do 10/100K why can't everybody else?

4yrs/50K Miles is fine for me. By that time, car already paid off and if it broke, it'll be my reason to justify buying a new car or making modifications to it

 

Here's a question: should I get the "undercoating"? Is it even still offered? I've read that this isn't really necessary for new cars.

Hopefully in four years, the SMT RX-8 will be out and that's what I'll trade in my 8 for... unless something else comes along....

 

No Ext. warrantty for me either. I will be counting the days till the 50k or 4 year to run out so I can mode the crap out of it. I should have it paid off and plan to get a truck as a daily driver and keep the 8 in the garage as a toy.

 

Extended Warranty is only best for people who plan on keeping their cars for a long period of time. I'm one of those. I like the security that if something major goes wrong it's protected. That's mainly what your paying for. It doesn't always work out that you'll need the warranty but it's peace of mind.

Just make sure you get the Manufactures Extended warranty. Not some 3rd party warranty, or one that the dealer sales that's not an offical manufactures warranty. It may cost a little bit more for the manufactures warranty, but in the long wrong it's less headaches, and your almost certian to be covered for the repair. Also you won't have to worry about some Fly-by-Night company disappering after 3 years. Right when your extended warranty finally goes into effect.

My parents bought an Extended warranty for their Toyota. Well this was an extended warranty that the dealer sold. (They didn't know, but know now) So it was really only good at that dealership. Well the dealer sold the Toyota dealership, and my parents were screwed, when they recently went to go get the A/C fixed on it. It was a warranty that was no longer Honored. That's the stuff you really want to stay away from.

I bought an offical Honda extended warrenty on my Honda Odyssey Van, recently the A/C was having problems. I took it in, and they replaced the A/C compressor ($1000). No problem! I paid about that much for my extended warranty. I've still got 3 years and 50,000 miles left on the warranty.

Like many have said the extended warranty helps resale value also. It gives the buyer security that if anything is wrong, they can take it and have it fixed.

Just make sure you negoitate the warranty you buy, you may not be able to negoitate the price on the RX-8 because it's so new. But you can certianly negoitate the warranty Time, Mileage, Deductible, and Price.
