K & N Cold Tube/Filter Installed

I bought my 8 last June. In July I bought the K & N Cold Tube and Filter system. Then I started reading all of the different posts regarding the pros and cons, so I held off. Well, today I committed. It took me about an hour and a half primarily due to my methodical, step-by-step procedure. It didn't help that I'd removed my battery terminal and had some major tools in the trunk. Oh yeah...the key...now I remember.

K & N did a nice job of providing all the necessary hardware with holes in the right places. The instruction sheet's photos were a little lacking, and I ended up back tracking a few times, but nothing major.

All back together and took it out for a test drive. DAYUUM was that loud! As long as I kept it under 4,000 rpms it was almost unnoticeable. But past that it started sounding like I had an after market exhaust system on board. I got out on the local freeway and hit 8,000 rpm for my shift point. I sounded like I had a horn section in my trunk!

As for feeling any kind of increase in HP? Hell, who knows. At least I'll not be buying air filters every couple of thousand miles. In all, I think it was probably worth it. Now I got a loud RX-8!

A couple of note worthy points that I failed to mention in my first posting.

K & N has done a nice job of using carbon graphite for the end caps on the filter cartidge. You can't see them very well after the installation, but its a nice touch.

All of the hardware that K & N provided to replace the stock hardware was all stainless steel. Again, a nice touch.

I know it isn't much, but the weight of the OEM intake box was a hell of a lot more than the K & N's. So I guess now I'm shaving pounds off of my 8 as well as treating it's asthma condition.
