Has anyone seen or read about any tests done by magazines or themselves of how engines look after running this gas? I religiously run Chevron 93, with a tank of Amoco Ultimate once in a blue moon. Does the "Techron" add any advantage? I searched it and read one of the guys worked at a gas terminal and each company has thier own additives. Anyone know any more? Is this the same Techron that you can buy to clean out the fuel system?

 

YES-Same Techron concentrate in a bottle (injector cleaner) that you can buy at most auto parts stores. I use it twice a year.

 

I use Shell V-Power!! Have done since day 1 of ownership. I'm sure both gasolines are very similar. What sort of MPG are you getting on average? Also, 6speed or auto?

I work with Yamaha Outboards and we have done extensive testing of Techron-Techroline. IT IS GREAT! We found a big difference in the life of the 2 stroke outboards that use it. The big outboards on big boats have to work a lot harder than any auto engine. This tends to make carbon deposits that stick the piston rings and engine failure. The problem is worse on under powered big boats in some of the Southern States. Yamaha sells a "Ring Free" that is about 80% concentrate. We don't have to market it as our customers do that for us as so many have found out how much it helps.

Many of the injector cleaners or other aftermarket users of the stuff have only 10% concentrate. The real stuff is almost as thick as 90 weight oil. Our is ~80% so that is is easier to pour and mix, but cost more. You get what you pay for!

I only use chevron, I put in another brand in once and the car idled hard. So I make sure that I go to the same gas station all the time and have had no problems

 

Yeah..I go to the same gas station everytime also.

I have 6speed. When I fill up from the empty light it takes about 13 gallons everytime give or take a few tenths of a gallon. I usually get around 260 miles per tank or 20mpg. This last tank I ran to the point of not knowing if I was going to make it to the gas station (needle BELOW E). I ran it to 275 miles. I can't recall how much gas I put in there though. I didn't notice a difference between the Amoco and Chevron tanks although I wasn't paying too much attention. Maybe I'll experiment some and see what comes up.

 

Are you doing alot of highway driving? I am wondering since you are getting a few more mpg than me and my city transits.

 

It's good to keep things clean, but be careful what you add. Some additives are designed for piston engines, which are much less sensitive than our rotaries. Our rotaries have many parts that are very sensitive to powerful cleaners.

And what about QT? I recently saw something about the new Top Tier gas rating thing... I notice that I have a slightly rough idle, maybe because of QT gas?

Well I've finished my experiment with Amoco Ultimate and Chevron with Techron. I ran 2 tanks of each consecutivley and brought the tank as empty as I felt comfortable. MPG difference? None really. One of the tanks of Amoco I got stuck in traffic on the Turnpike for 20 miles...which lessened my MPG calculation for that tank. In a true experiment you should repeat the experiment at least three times before making a conclusion. My methods were much less than scientific:-). I'm sure there was some difference in MPG, just nothing mind blowing. As far as how the engine ran...it felt as though the 8 had more pep with the Chevron gas. That was noticable. I know techron is used more for keeping the engine clean than performance, but there was a noticable difference in the smoothness of applying power. Amoco seemed a bit more rough, not as punchy either. I didnt try the Shell V-power but if you do a search on it I'd say the verdict is in. I think I'm going to stick with my Chevron as much as I can. Not only from my results, but even just the thought of retaining commonality in my gas.


EDIT: P.S. I'm sorry I don't have any fancy numbers to post. I didnt take it to a dyno nor do I have any type of ECU scanner or anything. Just gave it the ol seat of the pants test:-)

I basically only use Chevron and Shell.

 

This is not intended to be spam, but...

My wife works for Chevron. Here undergrad is in Chemistry, so she's not easily fooled (...although she did marry me... ). Chevron has gathered a good body of data that clearly shows that Techron prevents build up of post ignition deposits. Also, for what it's worth, Techron is one of the few product recommendations the Car Talk brothers make on their show - in their humble options, it works.

Needless to say, I always use Chevron gas in all our cars (I view it as an indirect investment in my daughter's college fund). I have never had clogged injectors or any fuel related problems in any of my cars in 20 years of using Chevron gas.
