Mazda has the basic 3 yr/80km warranty.

Is it worth getting the 7 yr Major Comprehensive warranty or any other extended warranty for that matter?

The cost is somewhere around $2600 for the 7 yr.

 

I got the standard 3yr. I figure that I won't be putting that much mileage into the car (80K) and I'm not abusing the thing. I know there's the potential for mechanical breakdown a couple of years down the road that 's out of my hands but I'll take the risk. Kinda like life insurance ... ha ha.

 

I have the standard one. What you should factor in is the 5 year powertrain part, that's where most of the expensive stuff is. In my mind you are paying $2600 for two years of coverage at a point where at all the teething problems should be gone. For that kind of money you can do major engine work or drop in a used transmission. I would not personally pay $2600 for $2600 worth of insurance that I very likely would never use. Even if you did have to lay out $2600 for a mojor repair, what is the likelihood of having to do that more than once in the 5-7 year time period. In my experience it is at year 7 and beyond where you start replacing everything on cars, shocks, wheel bearings, control arm bushings, brake calipers, exhausts, you name it. If you want the insurance I would personally stash the $2600 in a car maintenance piggy bank but it's all up to ones risk threshold and ability to pay. After owning a couple of Audis I have been well conditioned to accept some rather high repair bills so my risk/pain threshold may be higher than average :-)

 

I share the same view as scoop. One thing you should also consider doing is put the $2,600 in a bond that matures in 5-7 years or some other fixed term and that 2,600 will become almost 4,000 at the end of the term. Now you have $4,000 piggy. Hey, that's what Mazda is probably doing with your money.

 

Also, comprehensive warranties have a way of not being comprehensive enough. They never seem to cover your needs at a particular point in time.
