The February issue of Road & Track came today and had a double page picture of the new "Mercedes CLS - The Worlds First Four-Door Coupe". The first four-door coupe--where have I heard that before? Dave Hansen

 

Am not sure, but are all driving one right now? Think they call it the RX8.

The CLS500 is nice, but MB is smoking something if they think it's a coupe.

They don't think it is a coupe, they simply say that it has a profile more similar to a coupe than a traditional sedan, which it does.

What's the definition of a coupé anyway?
I thought a coupé would have 2 doors. The RX-8 would not be a true coupé, although it's designed to look like one.
Otherwise, would you consider the Alfa 156 to be a coupé because of its concealed rear door handles?

 

Don't take the meaning of the statement so literally. All they are trying to say is that, from a design standpoint, the car looks more like a coupe than a traditional sedan.

Ugly compared to the S-Class I put beside it? or ugly compared to supercars and rx-8's?

For what it is, I think it looks far better than the traditional boxy sedan.

 

I thought coupe was related to 2 doors not 4. Anyway, C$D must not have thought about the 8. Sheesh those guys. :D

 

Thats from Mercedes Canada website. You see, they believe it has the soul of a coupe, much like mazda thinks all their minivans have the soul of a sports car. It's just marketing, not to be taken literally.

 

There are plenty of aerodynamic sedans around, it doesn't make them a coupe..this statement can only be said about the RX-8 because it looks like a 2 door which is the definition of a coupe.

 

No no no, that doesnt make any senst. The 8 has 4 doors, whether it looks like it or not. it is not a coupe and neither is the CLS. I defy you to find another large 4 door sedan with lines as flowing as the CLS. That is what is so different about it.

Again, all mazda's vehicles aren't sports cars, but they like to claim they all have the soul of one, thats all mercedes is saying about this car.

You guys need to relax a little, mercedes isn't taking shots at the 8 with these comments, just trying to sell a few cars.

 

I'm pretty relaxed there BlueEyes :p , I didn't say the 8 was a coupe, I said it looks more like a coupe then the CLS just not in the right words I guess. I have nothing against MB, I just think C&D made a stupid comment. If they were to make that comment it would be more appropriate for the 8 based on the design of the 8 and the definition of coupe. Just my opinion.

 

I wasn't refering to you inparticular. I don't think this is C&D's idea, more so MB's marketing.
