I lived there (Atsugi) for 3 years, about 6 years ago

I wonder what kind of modifications they had to do to those cars prior to releasing them for bad-guy pursuit?

Well they are 16in wheels on it so its hard to say. They could be low power 5spds, autos, or 6-ports with 16in wheels. I know they use to have FD cop cars in Japan, along with skylines and what not.

Smaller wheels would give them better acceleration.

Cool. Looks like some Camaro Sate troopers around here. Similar color scheme.

The 8 must make a terrible cop car. There’s no room for prisoners, it gets terrible gas mileage, and your not catching any of those pacific muscle cars. I hope the guys driving it get some serious backup.

ha. When I saw that Pkskull77 posted on this thread, I knew he'd be bashing the car some more.

I am starting to wonder if Pksull77 even owns an RX-8.

I see what you're talking about. Out of 66 posts, not a single one had anything positive to say about the RX-8. Mostly ALL negative feedback. IF he does have an 8, I wonder why he just doesn't sell it and be through with the misery of owning one.

Cruel and unusual punishment - Splitting the rear and the front of the 8, and making the prisoners squeze into the back seat with the front door closed. :D

Well, gotta agree with Pksull77... I love my 8, but for police work - I'd take a Crown Vic' all day long. Could you imagine doing a "Pitts Manuever" in a 2,900 lbs. car?

Japan has a lot of very narrow streets, a quick and agile car like the RX-8 that out handles most cars is what you need. The Crown Vic would be a like driving an elephant through some of those narrow side alleys.

Now that is what a police escort should be, I believe I would write home to mom about that one if I were still stationed abroad. That would be a ride to remember.
