So, this is my first post to this forum, and I really hope somebody can help. I have the SR Motorsports Intake on my 6 speed manual RX8 with the new M flash for the programming. I am noticing some sort of hesitation in the engine when I am holding speeds. At 84 MPH I get something like caughing from the motor. Does anyone know what that is all about?
I also have the Nology Hotwires, the SR Motorsports high-flow catalytic convertor, a Borla exhaust, and the SR Motorsports underdrive pulleys.
This started as soon as I made the switch from the standard intake to the SR intake. So, I am assuming that it is the intake.
Will it clear up after the ECU has had a chance to catch up with the MODS? Or, should I just run the standard air intake (OEM) and a K&N filter?
I am not looking for horsepower gains from the intake...I am just trying to get the engine enough air to take advantage of the highflow cat and borla exhaust.

 

It's was the nology wires in my case. VividRacing took them back and I replaced them with the stock equipment and that problem went away for me. When the Mazda technician took the wires off and inspected the plugs, he said that it appeared that the plugs had been on there for 20 years they were that bad...

Return your wires if you can and get a refund. Vivid gave me store credit which is cool because I buy from them anyway....

It was not fun discovering this at CA. Speedway going 115 on the banking and having it cough all the way there.... that sucked...

 

I put the stock air-box back into the car and the hesitation went away. I am not having any issues now...but I did replace the stock NGK plugs with Denso plugs at the same time I installed the hotwires. Maybe this makes a difference.

Whats up from what i have heard and the research i have done its all depending on the car as far as the intake goes, some cars just dont like an aftermarket intake and some do, what most people tell you before ordering is to drive the car up to 3rd gear with the stock intake dissconnected and if the car hesitates then you will not be abble to use it. just my 2 cents hope this helps.

 

I had same problem when the SR intake was installed. When I explained to Gregg at SR, he told me to check the installation because the regtangular tab on the inner tube must be resting against the outside edge of the outer tube (MAF sensor issue). Once I made the correct adjustment, the speeds over 80 were smooth. I have still had some hesitation, but agian as Gregg expained, the ECU must relearn with the new intake. Although I seemed hesitant in this explanation, within the last 2 weeks of hard driving, the hesitation has been reduced almost completely.
Just recieved the SR exhaust today and will have installed on Thursday.

 

Is the sr intake a good short ram to get involved with or should i keep looking up different brands? I need a intake soon, so im looking around now.

 

Good job for searching but really no aftermarket intake is worth it IMO. The factory intake can really not be beat unless you are going for noise and bling. If so, get the AEM or RB Revi. Don't waste your time with a short ram.

Also keep in mind that the filtering ability of all aftermarket intakes is shitty so you will get more dirt in your engine.

 

You probably eat more microns of dirt in a bowl of cereal compared to the filtering ability of stock paper filter to K+N oiled or dry filters. I would not worry about THAT particular fact.

 

You don't know what you are talking about. Please stop posting and read first. RX8 race teams had sand in their oil pans after races running K&N filters. They now use OEM paper filters. Read any real filter test and you will see the filtering differences are substantial. I have a thread about this.

 

^^ I know exactly what i am talking about, and i have read your thread, AND i have read your numbers. And i will say it again, It is a moot fact to worry about. I personally know an RX8 buddy in NH, been running an oiled K+N for close to 100,000k miles of, 150k miles on his original engine. Think he worries about dirt microns in his engine? Haha!
