I build a good DIY grounding kit per Canzoomers directions, and installed it without issue. I'm trying to figure out how the Mazdaspeed/Canzoomer setup helps ground the ECU, b/c while it bounces off the ECU chasis ground, the cables don't really touch the ECU box. They do directly touch the engine per the setup.

Am I missing something? Did you guys open the ECU box when you installed yours or did you just attach the cables to the ground spot aobe the ECU box?

Really don't want to hijack this thread, but did anyone who installed a grounding kit notice any significant (or in fact any) improvement as the result? I'm not talking about "I think it's running smoother" testimonials, but rather obvious advantages...

 

I went overboard (oh, how unusual) on my ground kit....if one B.M.F. wire is good, two must be better!

I have two (I think they are '1' gauge) wires to each point.

Yes, just took the ground that the ECU uses, behind the box.

Let me say there is no obvious advantage, zip, nadda, (you could also say there is obviously no advantage!) apart from 'Blinging up' the engine bay.

Never mind the advantages, check out the colors!

Wow! That's alot of '1' guage wire, so how much weight did you just add to your car?

 

Yes, you're right 6speed8, went overboard....the only connectors I had on hand just held 2 of those wires!

Trimming it back to one per ground point, then a 4-to-1 connector at the engine block.

There seems to be no difference with better grounds....sad, but true.

I don't think the grounding kit does anything special for grounding the ECU, but more provides a better path to ground than the factory often does. On some cars, the grounding is so crappy that a kit can make a measurable difference. But once again, in the case of the RX-8, the Mazda engineers did a pretty damn good job with this too.

I too am not sure if it did anything for me. Maybe a slightly sharper throttle response and maybe a smoother idle. I think that it might be one of the reasons my car idles just like stock with my Canzoomer unit on, while many others seem to have an issue with it.

 

If your idle drops when you turn on the headlamps the grounding kit will stop that.

As for the PCM, you can't ground it. The case is isolated. It's grounded by two wires in the loom.

We've been doing extensive work on Maurice's car and discovered two more, no wait, three more ground points buried in the engine compartment.

Just in case you wanted to get even more enthusiastic about getting them all .
