I love the last line in this , quote
"In addition, the engine demonstrates significantly improved fuel economy and reduced emissions."
Compared to what?
You mean fuel economy was worse? I'm pretty sure that black soot on the tail pipe is the result of emissions.
Not complaining I love my RX-8, the rotary rules!
I know the engine is revolutionary, great horsepower to size ratio and all, but mileage and emissions seems to be the engines biggest problems not to mention low end torque.

Yes the Zoom-Zoom is why we bought it but look how much the rotary has improved! My first two rotarys (RX-2) got at best 21mpg and had 100hp. Now with more then twice the power I have on three occations been able to get 27.5mpg with cruz at 65mph still useing 87oct gas. My RX-2 got 12mpg in town and the RX-8 get 17mpg. I love the rotary its like driving an electric smooth motor!!!

Fuel economy is better than previous iterations of the rotary engine.

You're wrong about soot and emissions - the Renesis is actually cleaner than any comparable performance engine - it is much cleaner (lower emissions) than the Honda S2000 and Nissan VQ 3.5 in the 350Z, for example.

Gordon

I thought I read previously that Mazda had to reprogram the ecu just to get the engine to pass emissions(robbing us of horsepower) If the other models mentioned have worse emissions why cant they readjust the ecu to give us more power. perhaps power doesnt have to do with emissions?? So much for the ozone -- greenhouse here we come

No, that was to make the cat live longer with new regulations. It wasn't due to emissions.

One more thing as for mileage I cant get more than 18 mpg. And these guys talk about cruising the engine?? I thought thats bad for the rotary? Aren't we supposed to redline often and keep the revs up for engine health and maintenance? Pardon the newbie question but it just dawned on me...
besides that its much more fun to drive that way.

heh. It's not like you have to redline it every 5 minutes, or drive around town in 2nd gear at 8000 rpm..

I wouldn't say I take it that extreme but I certainly dont put around between 1-3k rpms. I thought thats kinda bad for the motor. I really try to keep the motor above 3k most of the time if not 4k is that too much? probably time to do a search and get off this thread huh?
