Question for those that have powder coated calipers. (Rear caliper e-brake bearing)
Question for those that have powder coated calipers. (Rear caliper e-brake bearing)
So I've got a set of calipers that I'd like to powdercoat. (Color code RAL-5012 to match Bilstein Springs)
The fronts came apart pretty easily and straight forward.
The rears took a bit of work as my snap ring pliers did not fit down the caliper bore easily.
I eventually got the snap rings apart, and they look to be something I can source if they're too bent up.
The part I'm having troubles with is the needle bearing that goes on the parking brake cam.
The bearing is a press fit and is VERY similar to the clutch pilot bearing, except it has a hole cut out of the side for the parking brake actuator.
Does anyone know how to get it out and does anyone know of a part number for its replacement?
The RX-7s use this unit, but it's unconfirmed to fit the RX-8.

I did attempt to use my clutch pilot bearing tool to remove it and destroyed the cages that the needles roll around in. The outer shell is stuck in there pretty good.

Thats not good that it got destroyed. I was wondering if you could just mask around that area, remove the tape, and bake the caliper? It may be difficult, but are you able to mic the cage's outside diameter? If so, maybe its worth a call to Atkins to ask if they can mic one on the shelf to see how close they are. It would make sense that Mazda would use the same bearing with the FE platform, seeing as they used the same bearing for 9 previous model years. I'm sure they saved money on development where they could. It makes sense that this is one area where they could have save a little money.

I had just taped over them when I powdercoated my calipers. TBH after powedercoating them I think I would just use caliper paint instead assuming you can find a matching color you like.
