Farewell RX-8 Club
Farewell RX-8 Club
I joined RX-8 Club pretty early on and have mostly lurked for the past 21+ years. But unfortunately, it’s now the end of the road for Ole’ Blue. Engine compression is so low that it no longer restarts when I stop for gas; I need to wait for it to cool down. The transmission also won’t go in or out of first gear unless it’s moving, and second gear is gone altogether. In the “annoyance” category, the AC no longer works, the driver’s window doesn’t go up or down without help, and the alarm goes off randomly if I lock it with the fob. I was okay driving it like this for a while, but now the nipple on top of the radiator broke off and it’s leaking coolant. So that’s the last straw… not worth fixing.
It's been a good run. Currently sitting at ~190k miles. There were really no major issues for the majority of its life, once we got past the initial slew of recalls and TSBs. Got a reman engine under warranty around 80k miles and a catalytic converter shortly after. New oil cooler lines around 145k miles (that was messy). Other than that, just the usual RX-8 minor issues and regular maintenance: a few taillight gaskets, console lids, and sun visors; new climate control unit, 8 sets of tires; 6 sets of ignition coils; 2 clutches; etc.
The interior has had some minor issues (sunglass holder, ashtray lid, pass. airbag cover), but overall, the body and interior have held up remarkably well for having been stored mostly outside and with heavy salt usage in the winters. No real rust anywhere. It’s been an outstanding vehicle and I’ll miss it for all the reasons you already understand. No regrets.
Thanks, RX-8 club, for all the years of knowledge-sharing, conversation, and debates!

However, many whom catch the rotary bug find their way home, eventually.
The doors open, seats warm and a good tale always to be heard or told awaits your return.
