manual automatic

Which mode in the automatic is most likely to afford better control/times: pure automatic or use the manual shift to try to keep it in higher rpms?

I ran 16.8 in D and 16.6 with the paddles. In D it shifts too early.

My 8 was in for service and got a rental car- a Hyundai SOnata - with a manual shift fucntion auto trans. In auto, the think is fairly typical auto performance, but in manual mode I cant belive the difference- great responsiveness- of course I was revving the hell out out of the engine in 1st ans 2nd gear- but I was totally impressed. I only drive the 8 auto trans once- and didn't remember there being such a difference bettween manual mode and full auto. Damn if the 8 had the kind of auto pickup the Hyundia had- I would have bought it!
