Mixing 4-Port and 6-Port Housings in RX-8 Engine Rebuild – Will It Work?

Hey everyone,

I’m in the middle of rebuilding a 6-port Renesis from an RX-8 and ran into a snag. One of the rotor housings and the rotor itself are no good, so I’m looking for replacements. I’ve got access to a 4-port RX-8 engine and was thinking about pulling the housing from that to use in my 6-port build.

My main question is:
Can I use a 4-port housing on a 6-port RX-8 engine and still have a reliable build? Will it mess with performance or reliability in a noticeable way?

From what I understand:
  • Both engines are from RX-8s, so the housings should physically fit together.
  • The port configuration is different, and the 6-port system has those extra intake ports for better high-RPM breathing.
  • I know I’d be sacrificing some top-end performance, but I’m more interested in getting the engine running well than building a race car right now.
Has anyone here mixed housings like this before? Any issues with imbalance in airflow, reliability, or tuning?

Appreciate any input — especially from those who’ve done something similar.

Both types of Renesis take the same part number housings... Just make sure the 4-port's are actually good. Those engines rarely live happy lives.

the housings for 4 and 6 port are the same the only differences are the 6 ports have 1 extra lower port on the front and rear iron making it a 6-port vs 4 port. everything else is exactly the same. if you can't figure it out, I can post a picture. rotors are all the same OTHER then there is a front rotor and rear rotor they are marked if you clean them up good. RC = rear Fc = front rotor eccentric shaft is even the same.
