Heater Hose Restrictor install

Hey gang!

I just picked up a new (to me) 8 fairly recently, 05 Shinka 65k miles, with some heavy mods, including auto to manual and 6port swap. Anyways, ive been hearing what to me sounds like a static like sound coming from behind the radio/passenger side which i am pretty sure is related to the coolant flowing too fast, as the PO purchased and meant to install the part, but never got around to it. My only question is how does this lil guy go in there? ive tried searching google, and on the forums and best ive got "install in heater hose coming off of thermostat before it gets to the firewall." Anyone have any more specifics?

Also, my previous 8 when cold starting would jump to around 3k idle, and slowly drop to about 1500-2000 while cold, before landing around 800 when fully warmed up. I never had issues and it always did it throughout 5 years of ownership so i never questioned it. this one, however doesnt and only jumps to around 1500 to idle on cold start and down to 800. Which is normal and why is one of them so different? O.o

Thank you!

The noise you are hearing may be related to air in the cooling system. Installing a new hose would have no effect on the noise, if in fact you are hearing air bubbles or air pockets in the heater core. You could also be hearing a small metal on metal rattle from a loose bolt or a bracket that's not tightened down properly. That would give a similar sound to static , though not as rapid or consistent.

I'm regards to the idle, my 8's rev to just over 2000 rpm when started completely cold and slowly idle down to around 800 rpm as the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

Hah, we are talking about the same thing. I'm not installing a hose, but the restrictor that goes inside the hose to slow down coolant flow to prevent it from flowing too quickly. It's a decently well known issue, yet I'm not finding any details on how to install the damn thing. I have an idea of where it goes, but I don't know which way or how far In the hose it goes.

As for idle, yeah that's about what mine does now, I wonder why my old 8 idled at 3k for a short time when cold maybe ill have to wait til winter when it's actually cold and not just 90 degrees outside In the morning

Bump

I plan on installing the restrictor tomorrow, any advice/ideas on how it goes in? At this point I'm just gonna push it into the hose with the angled face against the flow of the coolant. Im thinking the angle will help the coolant flow thru the hole.

it goes in where the heater core discharge hose attaches to the thermostat housing return pipe connection

thanks for the reply! Im a little confused though cause the hose circled in the second display leads from the resevoir tank doesnt it? Wouldnt the other connector, the straight one, be the one that leads to the fire wall?

no, the Z and Y letters at the LH side of the hose diagram are the heater core connections. The section leading to the Y connection is feeding hot coolant from the LH side of the rear iron, across the top of the firewall in the metal pipe, and then into the heater core at Y. Then exiting from the heater core at Z, and back around into the lower end of the t-stat housing where it feeds into the water pump inlet. The straight pipe with the smaller nipple on the t-stat housing (not clearly seen, the small nipple is the hose from the throttle body hot coolant piping) is for the hose to the reservoir tank.

Let’s try to clarify it more:

.

.

unless somebody connected the hoses backward on your t-stat housing, but they both are essentially connected to the water pump inlet flow path.

Hmmm I will have to take a picture when I can, if the last image is correct I think the PO DID route the coolant incorrectly. I think those two hoses are backwards, I'm not sure if that would significantly change or alter the system, but I'm 90% sure that angled hose is leading to the resevoir

It doesn’t make any difference other than that’s not how Mazda originally did it.

Both of those connection pipes on the t-stat housing feed into the same water pump inlet flow path channel.
