R3 Wheel Center Cap Not Fitting

Is anyone familiar with 2 different styles of center caps for the Rx8 R3 rims? I cracked a rim and purchased what I thought was a genuine replacement but when I go to mount the center cap, what fits on my cracked rim doesn't fit on my new one. Upon further inspection it looks like the mounting area for the cap is completely different to the point where no amount of force I think will get this cap to clip in.

New 'R3' rim

Center cap mounting of new rim with no recessed area in center for center cap clips

center cap not fitting

Old rim with a recessed area in the center where the center cap clips go

The rim was sold as a genuine replacement, Part #9965-04-8090. Is there something else that explains why the center cap mounting is different, or did I simply purchase a bogus rim.

Okay just to provide some additional information, I grabbed my bore scope camera too see if the markings on the back of the rim on the new one match the old one. Only difference I can see is the old one was part 9965 02 8090 and the new one is 9965 04 8090. When I look up the differences between these part numbers, anywhere that references them seems to reference them interchangeably. Could that be why there's a difference in the center cap mounting?

There are two different center cap part numbers. You might try contacting your dealer and ask them to look up the part for your VIN. Then tell them to order other part number.
