Howdy all. I'm Ed, live in pacific northwest. I recently bought a 2004 rx8 and love driving this car. It's a fckn blast!!! But I'm seriously uneducated and just got to get some basics down before I blow this thing up. I'm using conventional motor oil because mazda dealership said they do. However, just started adding oil to gas tank last time I filled it. I got full synthetic 2 stroke, like 27 bucks a quart, darn, lol. I watched a utube and added about 1/2 the video recommended, then washed the gas tube with fuel (premium) after the oil. I've been reading all kinds of info and know I'm really fckn clueless, but just looking for direction. Common sense says switch to synthetic next oil change. 5w-20?? And how much oil in the neck (no premix) per 5 gal?? Appreciate the help, thanks

 

Asking about oil is opening a can of worms around here. From my own personal experience of owning 5 RX-8's over 5 years and through my research this is what I've got:

Engine Oil:

Some run synthetic but ill always stick to conventional oil. The main thing no matter which oil you choose is to change both the oil and filter every 3,000 miles, preferably with the OEM Mazda filter. I personally run Castrol GTX 10W-40 in all my RX-8's as I live in a hot climate and I feel it will be better for the bearings. If I was living in cold weather, I would run 5W-30 but I would still always run Castrol GTX. 5 RX-8's, sold 3 and all 3 sold still running along with the 2 I still own. So take from that what you will.

Premix:

Any JASO FD rated 2 stoke will work perfectly fine. $27 a quart is too much. Lucas 2 stroke meets JASO FD specifications and is less than half that price. There are many many guides on premix ratios. This is a good video:

Not sure I understand what oil in the neck means. You want 1:200 ish oil to gas ratio, so if you put in 10 gallons, put in whatever 1/20th of a gallon is, I don't know imperial units. It's like a cup per full tank. You can pour the oil in before or after, no need to wash anything. It dissolves in gas on its own.

 

^+1 on Lucas semi-syn. 2 stroke.
Easily available at many parts stores.
8 oz. per fillup is what I do.
It's not a science, and some folks believe it's useless.
For an S1 with one less oil injector I believe if it doesn't help, it can't hurt.

Also, dealers recommending conventional oil is a North American thing.



I use Mobil1 synthetic.

 

re: useless, I think you confused premix with that stupid Sohn adapter nonsense

nothing wrong with premix; 1/2 oz premix per gallon of gasoline with a working oil metering pump is the standard; add oil and then fuel.

Add 1 oz. per gallon if premix only. Ideally you would not use an off-throttle fuel cut for premix only since without fuel there’s no lubrication, but this is generally a racing/aftermarket ecu consideration.

Also understand that the more oil it burns the more likely it is to eventually foul the cat converter and result in an emissions CEL for a street car if that matters where you live.

Thank you all for the wisdom, despite me breaking the primary "see no, hear no speak no oil" rule right out the gate, lol!! I've got to say, you know what??? I'm NEVER late for work....hahaha...this car ROCKS!!!!!

 

I run Castrol GT- convential 5W30 (I live in Canada)
Idemitsu Premix everytime I fill up. Always, Idemitsu.

 

I'm also new to the gang and as you I was unsure about pre mix but there is a lot of posts about it scattered through the forum.
I personally choose Castrol GTX 10w40 (Florida hot weather) + Idemitsu pre mix. You can find the pre mix for 16bucks on Amazon (better price if you buy 6).
