CA A little help with price negotiation

Hi guys,

Hope you are all safe and doing well. I’ve just joined the forum and I’m trying to get myself a RX-8!

I have found a good low milage (70000kms, 43000 miles) 2009 GT gray manual. The car seems to be in good shape, I test drove it and it was a blast. No rust on the exterior, and the undercarriage seemed pretty good for the age (I’m in Ontario). The owner is actually willing to pay for the compression test as long as I pay 9000$ Canadian (6600 USD).

Could you guys please help me with the negotiation? Assuming all goes well and the compression is fine, how much you think I should offer/how much the car’s worth? I certainly think that 9k is too much. (Thinking about 7.5k)

And thank you so so much in advance for your time and help!

P.S. I have done all my research about the car, and I truly want one as my second car. I initially wanted a BRZ/FRS but changed my mind after the test drive.

I don't know that 9000 is unreasonable. If the car is in good shape and the compression checks out, you can try to offer him 8000, but if he's patient I'm pretty sure he can get his asking price from someone.

It's only got 70k and its a series 2. 9G's will probably be a worthy asking price...

Thank you guys very much for the price insights! So the price does seem reasonable.

Sorry, I had no clear idea about the price range for second gen RX-8s.

It still stuns me how much vehicle you get for so little money. The car is very understated. People run away simply because of the different engine it has. Very few mechanics know how to work with this car. Always better if you know how to do things yourself, but the vast majority of people just want to take it to a dealer and let them fiddle with it.

Owned my R3 a little over 2yrs now. Best decision I made when it came time to change out vehicles.

Yeah I agree! Especially when you compare the overall experience, capability, and quality of these beauties to another (even much newer) car in their segment like a BRZ. I have a little experience working on my daily (a very old Lexus “RX” 350) and planning to also work on my future RX-8.

Happy to hear about your car! Can’t wait to get one myself!

Oh for sure way better than the interior of the 86. I was expecting big things from that vehicle. I was very disappointed when they first came out. I'd take a Miata over them any day of the week.

Hope the deal works out for you!

I sold my GT for a higher price with more km on the odo, but I also sold mine on the west coast of BC where cars tend to be more expensive due to the lack of snow and thus rust.

Generally, CAN$9k is a great deal if the compression test checks out, maybe negotiate just so you can save some money on tax. CAN$7.5k is lowballing IMO.

You can check vmrc Canada for used car values. Also cargurus Canada may be able to give insights. That said finding a pristine rx8 is getting difficult. 9k seems reasonable for an s2 especially if everything checks out.
