Hi guys,

I'm having a strange problem with my 8 that no one can seem to figure out. Hopefully someone can give me some insight into what it could be. I'll try to give as much detail as I can:

The problem occurs in gear from 0k rpm - 3k rpm. It sounds like muffled helicopter rotors and increases with speed. It is much more pronounced when the engine is under a strained load (ie: accelerating from low speed in too high a gear). The noise doesn't really exist until the vehicle has warmed up. If I slip the clutch when engaging, noise doesn't seem to occur. I'm leaning towards the idea that it's tranny related. I recently had a problem with the clutch where engagement/disengagement was rough, inconsistent pedal feel, changing bite point, etc.. I ended up replacing the pressure plate, master cylinder and clutch line and that's seems to have addressed the issues except for this rotor noise. It doesn't affect driveability but it's pretty annoying and I'm unsure of whether it's a sign of something failing or causing any damage.

Anyone have ANY idea what it could be?

you replaced the pressure plate, what about the clutch, throw out and pilot bearing?

 

I inquired about that and was told the discs and bearings were fine. They were unsure of whether or not the pressure plate was the cause of the issues but that was their best guess. The pressure plate was one they hadn't seen before so it was upgraded with a stronger one. I was getting the rear main replaced at the time so they were already able to visually inspect it all.

Not sure if it's related but the rear main appears to be leaking again. (Been about a month since replacement and I'm having it looked at again next week). Engine was replaced about 30k kms ago. Is it possible that something wasn't aligned properly when the new engine went in creating all these problems?

 

i would find a new shop. the factory exedy clutch kit should come with everything and makes no sense to just replace the plate. if you are pulling the trans anyway i would do the entire clutch. disk, pressure plate, pilot and throw out bearing

 

I understand that logic but at the time, I was laid off and wanted to keep expenses down. Had no signs that the disc or bearings needed replacing so opted not to do them to keep costs down. (Clutch was replaced at the same time the engine was replaced. Previous owner and different shop.) I think the majority of the issues I was having with the clutch were from a bad master and improper pedal adjustment.

 

well hope ya figure it out and keep us updated. i understand the money thing but saving a few bucks on parts doesnt offset the labor involved in pulling the trans again. also i was unaware you can just buy the pressure plate. gl

 

Thanks. They specialize in clutches so they sell components individually. If I ever find out what it is, I'll let you guys know. If anyone has ever experienced this problem, please chime in.

Sound advice. I only run Exedy clutch kits on my car and haven't had any problems.

 

After talking to some people and doing some digging, I'm thinking the problem may be an exhaust scavenging issue. My cat is definitely on it's way out so I'm hoping that's what it is as I was planning on replacing the entire exhaust system anyways. Once I replace the exhaust, I'll keep you guys posted on the outcome.

Just installed the RB midpipe and catback. Noise still exists... Looks like the investigation continues.
