Federal FZ-201 (soft)

Hey 8Club!

Been eyeing these for some time now, they do offer a med compound as well. Very reasonable price point imo. Does anyone have first hand experience? Or perhaps you drove with someone on a club day? Any input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I have instructed some students running the medium compound tire, and it didn't suck, although I cannot draw any direct comparisons to other tires without like-for-like data. I would order a set to try, but it isn't much more expensive to buy known-good tires, such as NT01s or R888Rs, when they are on sale, so I choose not to roll the dice on slightly cheaper China tires.

Edit: Here is some information:

i've been interested in the soft compound for hillclimbs (need grip from turn 1... and runs are less than 2 minutes). but i talked with PTS and the stock is fairly old. add on that the limited feedback, and it's tough to gamble.

Have you tried A052? I've heard some amazing things from friends and seen some impressive results online. Expensive though.

Yeah, you might as well quit screwing around and get some real race tires

Its an older thread, but I have done a few Time Trials with them. This was on my Toyota 86. I have them in 235/40/17 and 245/40/18.

Pros:
Cheap
Ability would be between an R888R and an RR?
Great traction for the price
Predictable handling
Pretty good turn in and feel
If the track is warm and the air temperature is oh 60F+ the tires heat up quickly, not A7 quick, but not too far off. At WGI with 80F and sunny I was able to start pushing almost right away.
The tire wear is pretty good, although my car is low power, lightweight, and full race alignment...my 18s are about 10 heat cycles, and 17s are about 4 heat cycles. From the other people in my club running them they say 14-17 seems to be where they start to give up. However, it seems to be a steady degradation in traction and not a sudden drop off like an RE-71R

Cons:
If it is cold out, they are a handful. In the mornings 40F iirc, the tires took a few laps at NHMS to get up to temperature.

Conclusion:
Lots of value in this tire, they are consistent, last fairly long time, pretty good traction, and half the price of Hoosiers.
